I know I'm now so wildly late to the party on this one that actually all the original party-goers have evolved into whole new species, but I've been playing this game with friends ever since I first heard the episode of CP on Radio 4. Here are some of our suggestions:

John Grisham - The Pelican Brie
John Steinbeck - The Pear, Of Mice and Me
Stephen King - The Dark Hal, Miser, Under the Dom
John Scalzi - The Last Colon

But the absolute best, the one which I cannot top, is an academic study of how we think about (and indeed think about thinking about) poverty. It is by Jacques Ranciere and, given the nature of this game, it is entitled...

    "The Philosopher and his Poo".
