Though what will they think we called 2000? Twenty Oh Oh?

I've just realised that, because of the Olympics, I'm entirely used to reading '2012' as Twenty Twelve; and yet calling this new year 'Twenty Eleven' still sounds odd and wrong. Also, I bet an anachronistic mistake that film-makers in 2090 will make when making films set in the past decade is that people will refer to 2009 as 'Twenty Oh Nine', because once it's out of living memory, it won't occur to anyone that we (mostly) went on calling it 'Two Thousand and Nine' for at least the first eleven years of the century.

New year - new blog policy. I'm going to put stuff up here more often, and of more types; but therefore some things will be quite small and inconsequential, like this one. Also, I'm going to start putting drawings up again. I did that once before, then almost immediately got embarrassed by them and stopped. But I really want to get better at drawing, and the way to do that is to practice.

Happy New Year!

I think I'll try using "twenty-'leven" and see if anyone minds. Though since it's Texas, it might be fairer to spell it "twinny-levin."

I look forward to the drawings. I wouldn't be averse to the occasional chair monster, either!

heheh -- "Get Dressed Ye Merry Gentlemen." New favorite carol.

I often wish we could be like the crusty old colonial types in John Buchan books who are always referring to things that happened "In the year of '08" or whatever. I absolutely can't get my brain round it being twenty-anything.

  6. And is "the noughties" really what we settled on as a name for that last decade? Is that what we all decided? Really? I only hope history can forgive us. Happy New Year you!

  8. Simon -

Noughties never caught on in the States as we do not refer to zero as nought. As a matter of fact my spell checker wants to correct nought to nougat. Mmmm, I like nougat. And living in the UK introduced me to regular use of nought which I quite like as well. Nought nougat, though, would be a shame.

I can't go from nougat and nought to the new year in any way except abruptly. So - Happy New Year!

  11. Do you think that last millennium might one day be known as the Millies?

Could that mean that there is the potential for the last decade to be known as the Mmillie Nillies?

I am going some distance for Roman numerical humour.

It is CRITICAL to put the prefix 'twenty-', 'ninteen-'or even 'eitghteen-' whatever for archivists. They depend on people not saying "it was in the year of '08" ['08 what???] I suppose with the advent of computers, it will most likely be 19-something or 20-something if one finds a blog or equivalent, but still....
