Prepare for final descent.

…Well, I say news; but the hints I've been dropping have been pretty broad. Anyway, this is it officially: I am currently writing the next - and final - episode of Cabin Pressure. It will be a forty-five minute special, and it will be recorded early in the new year.

Infrequently Asked Questions, But Which I Imagine May Become More Frequently Asked Now.

Why are you only doing an episode, not a series?

Because that has always been the plan - at least since about Molokai. When I was planning series three, I decided that (BBC and cast permitting), I would write two more series, and build towards a cliff-hanger, followed by a special. I knew by then how important it is when writing an episode to have the ending in mind, and I thought the same would probably be true of a series.

Why are you ending it?

Well, it has to end somewhere, and six years and twenty six episodes feels like a pretty good score.    And this way I get to build towards an ending that I feel is satisfying, rather than it simply stopping one day… or worse, getting tired and repetitive. It's also allowed me to let the characters and their relationships change and develop over the last couple of series, knowing that I'm building in a particular direction, in a way that I couldn't have done if I'd had to keep them in sitcom limbo.

Besides, you can't fight the alphabet…

But there are a lot more letters in other languages!

I know. But be honest, which is more satisfying: A to Z or A to Ø?

No, you be honest: it's because you can't get the cast any more, isn't it?

It really isn't. It's very difficult to get them all together, certainly, but they continue to be astonishingly generous about finding ways to make it work. No, this is all my fault.

When did you say it would be recorded? And broadcast?

On the… Ah, you nearly got me. No, I'm afraid I don't know. I had, as many of you had guessed, been working towards another Christmas broadcast, but unfortunately that hasn't worked out. So, as early as possible in the new year, I hope; and I'll let you know here as soon as I can...

Can't wait to see it (well, hear it), John!

Maybe then my mum will stop asking me "will Martin take the job?!" incessantly. I'm not sure why she thinks I have a direct line to your brain...

Ending with fireworks. Brilliant!

This is very good news Mr. Finnemore!! Very good news indeed, even it if has to end we'll be looking forward for the special!

Thank you Mr Finnemore! This is BRILLIANT news!

Am I the first to see this or is everyone else too stunned to comment? I must say that I think you are absolutely right to go out on a high note, although no more CP fills me with sadness. My only hope is that this time I manage to get tickets for the final recording. If not then I'll just wait for the broadcast of Zurich (or are you just toying with our minds here?). Thanks for writing such a brilliant series, with brilliant characters played by brilliant actors. Oh and looking forward to Clue on Monday and your next appearance. Hope they make you a regular. Also well done with the wall on Only Connect. I hadnt realised you are so tall, or is ti just Alice Arnold and Konnie Huq are tiny?

Anonymous said...

You may call me a fool, Mr Finnemore, but I'm tearing up already. I mean, I get all that you're saying. It has to end at some point. And you've worked so hard for many years on it, and the cast have too.

But... an ending. An ending which means the series will be no more. No matter if it's happy, or sad, or one of the tricksier "The shenanigans will carry on without the audience" types, it'll make me cry.

I can't wait, but, meep!

I am SO going to try and get a ticket, my poor health bedamned!

Good luck, Mr Finnemore, and God Speed!

Can't wait to hear it! Really hope I can get tickets

Wonderful news - I can't wait! Your time, as ever, is perfect!

Looking forward to it, sir. It's been a pleasure listening to you become a bloody master of the sitcom and I hope for more in the future (as maddening as they appear to be to write) as well as your sketches and anything else you set your mind to.

So excited! Can't wait!!

This news actually makes my heart feel a little heavy, because I don't want to say goodbye to these beloved characters, but at the same time, it's definitely the right decision, because you're the writer, and you know what you're doing. You've given us brilliant episode after brilliant episode, and I am absolutely positive that this will end in the best way possible, and I can't wait for it! Thanks for informing us, and I'll still be listening to your other work, like your Souvenir Programme!

Rebecca said...

Perhaps if BBC Audience could be prevailed upon to book the Albert Hall for the recording, we *might* all squeeze in! No, that's a silly idea - Wembley would probably be better...

Kat said...

Oh John, so terribly excited about this! Not sure Cabin Pressure could ever be mediocre or dull, but it's better to go out out with a bang, and I'm confident you can deliver this! Thought it might be Zurich, and hope it will tie up all the loose ends.

Thank you for this wonderful news! Happy writing!

As an American, I came to the Cabin Party late. (A radio show - who knew?) I have enjoyed every minute. I love at least knowing when the end IS the end. So often (TV) programs here break at season's end, never to return, no resolution, no "closure", (for lack of a better word).

So sorry it's coming to an end, but delighted that the creator is in control of the finale.
My sincere gratitude goes out to you. (I'm sure lots of drivers on my commute have envied the smiles and laughter Cabin Pressure has brought forth from me.)

Anonymous said...

have enjoyed having an abundance of you on TV and the radio this week. I hope to have many more Finnemore filled weeks in the future! Thanks for the many wonderful hours of entertainment.

Unknown said...

Obviously more Cabin Pressure is ALWAYS a good thing but I'm so conflicted as to what I want to happen in this final episode, at least with the ending in Yverdon-les-Bains I could have my own little head-canon of what happened but this way I will know for sure! I'm sure whatever happens will be the exact right thing and I will have an OOOOOOOH OF COURSE! moment when I realise that yes, of course that is exactly the ending I wanted. So excited but also incredibly sad, I don't want it to end!

John, I can't thank you enough. I admit freely I discovered Cabin Pressure because of Benedict, but I grew to love it for many more reasons: the wonderful cast (yourself included), the characters, the perfect comedy timing. But most of all for your damn clever writing. Without that, none of it would happen. All good things must come to an end (and so they should) and Cabin Pressue will continue to be something we, as a family, enjoy time and time again. can't wait to hear Zurich. Would be even more wonderful to be there in the audience.

I am going to have to become very, very familiar with the BBC Radio audiences webpage next year, I can tell. Sorry to see Martin, Arthur, Douglas and Caroline take off on Gertie into the sunset but look forward to the final special nevertheless.

Sil T said...

Dear Mr. Finnemore, I completely understand your reasons, but as someone hopelessly addicted to CP, the Zurich news left me quite sad.

Thank you for the many hours of entertainment though, which will be repeated for many years to come.

(And please give everyone a very happy ending!)

Thanks for the news, looking forward to hearing the conclusion! We know it will be brilliant :)

Happy and sad day for the airdot fandom :) Thank you, John!

I don't know whether to dance or cry. Am both happy and sad. Probably best to opt for something a bit pouty, eh? Like a tango.

So, SO happy to hear there's a little more CP and a longer than usual episode to boot - but very sad to say good-bye to the characters.

Not that I really will - because I quote them all the time. Every time the husband drives a bit too fast, I'm all "Hey, chief, I might be wrong but ... this makes me afraid of the car infront". And every time my fannishness gets the better of me, I think of Arthur of the Britons getting it with both barrels.

Look forward to seeing what you do next, John.

**squishes you**

To be honest, I'd go for A - Å! :P

This was expected, but I'm still sad...
I totally understand the reasoning behind it, but I'm still sad...
I'm glad we get an extra long episode, but I'm still sad...

John, thank you so much for creating this amazing show! I'm eternally grateful for that! <3

I'm happy for a final episode and a tiny bit sad but i will continue to listen to the episodes over and over P:) at least i will finally know if Martin takes the job or not P:)

Thanks so much for the news. My 13 year old son won't stop asking; he's become a radio show aficionado because of CP.

I wonder if it's possible to release some video snippets or something of the final recording? For all of us who ever wanted to attended a recording but couldn't get tickets or afford the trip, it'd be really neat to see. I realize that may not be practical though.

Thanks again to you and the cast!

Anonymous said...

This is sad and exciting at the same time (Schrödinger's cat, Arthur might say). I'm so looking forward to hearing it!

If there's going to be a public recording, can you PLEASE try and have it on a Saturday? I'd fly to England for it if I was finally lucky in the ticket lottery this time, and Sundays are really bad for Ryanair flights back home...

Dear Mr. Finnemore,

greetings from Germany! I am thrilled and looking forward to the next episode - and I am sad that it has to end. Capin Pressure is an evening ritual for me - I listen to the episodes again and again, falling asleep with a smile. Thank you for the wonderful trips my mind was able to take - and for the hours of laughing over the antics of Martin, Douglas, Carolin and Arthur. Especially Arthur :)

I guess all good things come to an end - and I'm happy that it will be 45 minutes long.

And now I'll be sad for a bit to have to say goodbye to those four very special characters.

I'm sure it'll be brilliant ;-)

Toni P. said...

Thank you John, you are Brilliant! Cabin Pressure is a sauce of happiness! Cheers. X

Anonymous said...

How...sad. Although I suppose all good things must come to an end and this is a really good thing thats going to come to a great end.

These characters you've made I hold close to my heart. They've made me laugh hysterically and sometimes cry but have also helped me grow closer to my own family and gain friends around me.

I would love more than anything to be at the last show, but living across the sea and drowning in student debt makes it quite impossible. I'll be there in spirit though!

Thank you for creating such an incredible show and I hope to see more great things to come :)

When I first heard of CP 2 years ago, I was (as an American) overjoyed there were still radio plays still in existence - somewhere! Because of CP, I have truly learned to laugh again, delve into my own imagination, connect with people whom I never thought would be part of my life, and make every day a search for a lemon or yellow car. Thank you for making someone who so often has to make others smile, know what it feels like to truly escape again! Cheers, and I'll "see" you in Zurich:-)

Laura said...

Dear Mr Finnemore:
As a fan of your work (especially Cabin Pressure) I would like to thank you for your efforts in making the show one of the funniest ones I've ever heard and also tell you that although I'm deeply sad to see Arthur, Martin, Carolyn and Douglas (and Herc) go, I completely understand and respect your decision to end the Cabin Pressure with Zurich. A proper final is the best way to end, as Arthur would say, this brilliant series. I know it must have been a very though decision to make seeing the fans are constantly pushing for more so I respect very much your stance and applaud you for not caving in.
I'll keep listening to your other works because quite frankly, they always make me see life a little brigther and smile a little more.
My best wishes.
Laura

Like everyone else, delighted and sad in equal measure. I will miss having new episodes, but there will be 26 perfect episodes to listen to. This show has worked on every level: plot structure; characters and their development (individually and as a team); wonderful wordplay; superb performances throughout; and deliciously silly! Congratulations on a brilliant achievement.

And I do hope there will be space in Zurich for Princess Theresa!

Unknown said...

Ah well, I thought you might end with the letter Z as it does round things up nicely and everything's been leading towards a big final conclusion.

It also means my Dad can stop asking me what's happening with CP too.

I'll be sad to see CP end, but glad that it will go out in a glorious blaze of blazing gloriousness, rather than a damp fizz [buzz 'ave a banana].

Jeanne said...

I'm achieving Arthur-like levels of happiness that we get another episode. Even though it means the end.

Ann Sheppard said...

The very definition of mixed emotions - A new episode ? Yaaaay :)
- the very last episode ... #despair
Maybe with this advance warning we can all get our mourning over in time to enjoy what will be a perfectly judged ending - we trust you Mr Finnemore. Much love and thanks for sharing the contents of your comedy brain ♡

Susanne said...

Just adding my tuppence here. Cor, this should be good! Looking forward to it, and to whatever it will be you'll delight us with in the future. Although I must say, I will miss Arthur. So it's with one smiling and one crying eye (can eyes smile?) that I say - Brilliant news! :)

Personally, I prefer series that have a proper ending and do not end because the cast were bored or the audience left or whatever. So, besides the wonderful cast, the brilliant writing and the fun "Cabin Pressure" is perfect for me in this respect, too. And I was hoping for an extra long episode!

You should be proud of your achievements: six (or so) years, 26 episodes, a worldwide fanbase - I don't think a lot of radio shows can compete with that.

Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!!!

Lee said...

I'm simultaneously very happy and very, very sad about this news. I kind of expected it, and I completely understand the reasoning, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to miss it an incredible amount. I'm sure you will give it the perfect send off and I just want to thank you, so much, for this wonderful show.

Joyful and sad tears are guaranteed! Martin has to move on I guess, just like everyone at MJN. I will miss all of them nevertheless. A great era will end.

I only have nice memories of listening to your show and just like everybody else I'm obviously sad to hear you're finishing it. But please, make it better than The IT Crowd finale! I know you can do it, John! :)

Lii said...

My heart is breaking that this will be the last episode, but at the same time, I'm so glad to hear that it will end properly instead of slowly collapsing like a flan in a cupboard. All I can say is that I hope it ends happily, with Martin properly where he belongs -- his MJN family.

Thank you for a brilliant show, John, and thank you for giving us such wonderful characters to love.

Mr. Finnemore--all I can say is "thank you."

Thank you for creating these characters.

Thank you for telling their stories.

Thank you for the miles and miles of joy you have brought our family as we traveled about New England and just about town as we listened to the trials and tribulations of MJN Air.

My girls, ages eight and ten, never fail to ask if we can listen to 'CP' once we get in the car.

And if the trip is long enough, I never fail to indulge them.

Thank you for all the moments when my girls respond to various situations or requests with a perfectly apt quote from the show.

Thank you for hours and hours of pure joy.

All the best,

Great news about Cabin Pressure, I’m really very excited (and a bit sad) to hear the end! I discovered CP during a very difficult time in my life and it helped keep me sane and allowed me to have a laugh or two (or twenty) when things got bad, so for that I am eternally grateful to you and the rest of the wonderful cast for creating such a fantastic series. Best of luck with the writing and recording, we are all eagerly awaiting to hear the result!

You're right, A to Z is perfect, even though I shall miss you all dreadfully after that.

But, 26 episodes is a "brilliant" turn-out for one writer and I shall guard my collection of CDs most jealously to listen and listen and listen . . .

Thank you so much for helping create such believable characters, the wonderful MJN Air and finding tremendous actors to take on the roles; it has to be said that the casting was also "brilliant"! (Including - among many others - lemons, polar bears, dragonfruit, green umbrellas, big hats and apple juice!)

Very much looking forward to "This Week . . . Zurich!!" in the New Year.

Thank you once again; and I, too, look forward to sharing in your future work.

long running sitcoms always suffer from decreasing quality, so I'm glad you're ending it before the same can happen to CP.

The news we have all been waiting for! Thanks so much for keeping us updated John! I am so sad CP is ending but that is a mark of how excellent this show is, it brings huge smiles to my brother and I, we have forced countless friends to listen to it because it is the BEST!

I actually really want Arthur to be okay out of all this. I know he has the ability to be happy pretty much wherever he is, but to me he is sort of cosseted in the world of MJN and I want him to be safe if it falls apart! Hats off to you for making characters that feel so real that you end up feeling real concern about their lives!

Doctor Who, Sherlock Series 3, The Hobbit... now I can add this to my Things To Be Excited About list! Thank you John Finnemore!

Very good news! I am actually glad Cabin Pressure is going to end - many people were hoping for another series, but what for? The fate of MJN Air needs to be sealed.

Kit said...

Like many, I suspect, I initially came to Cabin Pressure because of Benedict, but I've been intrigued from the first minute and hooked since the "Seems the cargo hold heating may not have been turned on"/"Masterly use of the passive voice" exchange in "Abu Dhabi," which caught me by surprise with how funny I found it. (That, and dry grammar-based humor is always a way to my heart.)

I've gotten almost inexpressible delight and comfort from listening to Cabin Pressure, particularly as I began this past winter while I was going through awkward college-to-life-beyond transitions, and its surface simplicity (while actually being very involved and engaging and intricately done indeed) is inspiring on both personal and creative levels. I'm sad to see it go, but I think you're absolutely right to end it on a high note, and I'm so looking forward to that. (I also enjoy that you've had a very specific ending in mind and worked up to it so expertly; that seems like a basic tenet of writing, but nowadays with a push for endless series for everything there's a lot of getting lost along the way.)

Thank you, so much, for creating such a perfect little sitcom, and please know it's going to be the best kind of bittersweet anticipation waiting for the last bit. I wish everyone involved good luck in getting "Zurich" (?!?) out to the world.

All the best from Chicago!

Unknown said...

I'm happy that at least the last one is still coming! :D I was afraid it would never come to existence...

Good luck with writing, and in case you have so much inspiration that it doesn't fit in 45 min... I don't mind if it's a double long episode...?

(If that's too costly you could always try a kickstarter! Cabin Pressure has so many fans, that will probably work out more than fine ;))

Much love from the Netherlands! :)

Good day, Sir!
I need to ask you two things. First- what is your choice for the place that starts with 'Z'? I seem to see one name come up, but I do not know if that is just a guess based on Swiss Air. And next- will you have the same cast?
Thanks!

CliveW said...

Almost the best possible news - a full-length finale on Christmas morning would have made our year in this house - but two out of three...
…And let's be honest, they're the big two, which will put the full stop to CP as the beautifully realized work of art it is. We've enjoyed Molokai many times since that 2010 Christmas surprise, so Zurich will have a life well beyond its first airing. It’s the content that matters most.

All the best with the challenge you've set yourself. The best parallel I can think of is the finale of Blackadder Goes Forth, which also had the task of seeing off (rather more literally than we hope you’re planning) a nucleus of well-loved characters without sinking into slushiness, and accomplished it in style. (See also M.A.S.H. for how not to do it.) We’re eagerly looking forward to seeing you do it your way.

I'm so glad to hear about the final episode. Personally, I think it's a great idea to end it before it becomes stale and while it's still fun for everyone, cast and fans alike. I wish more people would adhere to that idea. I'd rather have a short series that I can love forever than a long one that I begin to dislike. But that's just me.

So long and thanks for all the laughs, John!

Dear Sir
It is with great sadness that we note the passing of MJN Air. As a fan of the airline I wish to request a couple of favours before the business winds up.
1. Please don't fly Gerti into a mountain. Or Fitton.
2. On no condition is Mr G Shappey esq to be left in control of the aircraft/business.

Your co-operation in these requests would be much appreciated, and I think I speak for more than myself when I say I am sure that this final adventure will be BRILLIANT.

Yours slightly sadly but mostly cheerfully,

I cannot wait for it, and yet, it'll be so hard to say goodbye to those 4 amazing characters - I can't believe they'll be gone for good!

However, all good things must come to an end, and it's understandable to want to end it when you feel your characters have told us all they could (although there can never be too much of Arthur).

Thank you so much, John Finnemore, for bringing the delightful antics of these amazing characters into my life. It's been a blast and I bet the finale will be spectacular.

As sad as I am for end of the show, I'm excited that you'll be able to offer a proper send-off in the way you had hoped for. The characters, the writing, everything has been a terrific gift from you to the fans and we're thrilled to have taken the journey with you. On to the next destination!

Surely there has to be scope for a spin-off series. Arthur's escapades as the man who pushes the thing like a birdcage in hotels. Married life with Carolyn and Hercules the Berkules. Douglas back at Air England. Heck, even a series focusing on Tommo, the monosyllabic Aussie engineer - inspired by whom, I spent several days answering every question I was asked with 'yup'.

Anonymous said...

Well we have a bit of dilemma here don't we? I mean we all want to see Martin marry a princess and get a good job but we don't want him to leave his MJN family. So how about he stays with Gerti, and Icarus Removals becomes a successful business. Cue new show where Douglas, Arthur and Carolyn have to help Martin deliver furniture and the like from Abbotsbury to Ashby-de-la-Zouch (I googled it. That's all I could find zed-wise.)
By the way, well done on Only Connect but I can't believe you didn't get Muppetational. Didn't you hear me shouting at the telly?

Adding to a long list of very similar comments- I just wanted to say thank you for everything. This damnable adventure in radio sitcom is number twenty-three on my list of 'The Most Brilliant Things In the Entire History of Ever.' and I don't really know if it gets more eloquently put than that. Endings to such things are difficult, but I can tell you right now that there will be no better finale than the one you devise. Godspeed.

Where do I begin? Joy at the knowledge that there will be another installment of my all-time favorite sitcom, sadness at the knowledge that it is the penultimate episode? I understand your reasoning totally, but these characters have become so real, so dear to me. You can be proud that, as a writer, you have achieved something that has enriched countless lives and created characters that will live on in the hearts of your many listeners.

I have been thinking that of all the crew of MJN, Douglas has the most to lose. Carolyn has Herc and Arthur(and Snoopadoop), Martin has a new job and girlfriend, Arthur will always be happy, no matter what he does, but Douglas? He's an aging pilot with 3 ex-wives and a career that is winding down. What will the future hold for him? Black market smuggling?

Thank you once again, John, for making all our lives more enjoyable and richer!

BRILLIANT!

John, I cannot thank you enough for the existence of this series. I'll admit (like many others) that I was initially drawn to the program because of Benedict, but now I am absolutely in love with it (I also enjoy your Souvenir Programme--you are an absolute genius). I have it on my phone to listen to--it is the PERFECT pick-me-up whenever I'm feeling down. (Just a quick personal note, I'm going through some trying medical issues right now and Cabin Pressure is like some sort of special ointment that's helping me get through.:) )

I am so very, very delighted to hear this news. I can't wait!!

(I kind of hope Arthur finally meets someone. It would be fantastic to see/hear what kind of girl he'd start dating. ...No offense to Arthur! I love Arthur! ...Hey, maybe--naaaah.)

A new episode! What exciting news! Although I of course don't want it to end, all good things must, right? Having an official end in mind, as much as I hate to admit it, is a smart writer's plan (which you very much are). However you choose to have it end will be great, I'm sure. I wish I'd had a chance to see a recording, but oh well. Looking forward to hearing it!

Well, obviously, with Martin agonising over whether to accept a job at Swiss Air, it had to be Zurich next.

And I completely agree: definitely bring things to a conclusion before you jump the shark and have Douglas take off with a jet-pack to force his way into a stricken Gertie and wrestle the controls from an unconscious Martin. It's one of those standard "did you know" things that Fawlty Towers ran for two series of 6 episodes each.

Thanks for sticking with your vision of what should happen with Cabin Pressure, John. It has been one of the many pleasures of this show that you have always held the characters, plot and humourous possibilities in the highest regard - not gone for what could have been popular mistakes (never on TV!)
I will really miss Carolyn, Arthur, Douglas, Martin, Karl, Herc, Gertie and everyone but I think the satisfaction of a complete story cannot be underestimated.
So glad it's Zurich too.
Nice one. John.

We're finally here at the end of the alphabet. I'll admit, I've been dreading this moment for a while, but I understand why this wonderful show must come to an end.
I'm going to miss this show so much! For me,the characters were more than just... characters. They were people with real stories to tell, and to have them just vanish from the world will be a real loss, for everyone. I wish I had an Arthur in my life!
Awesome work John; you sir are a literary genius! Keep making Radio 4 interesting, okay? And, as a favour, maybe you could just tuck Arthur, Caroline, Martin and Douglas away safely in some hidden place? So that one day, in England's great time of need, they will awake and GERTI will fly to our aid...
You get the idea. Keep writing you clever man!

I am utterly chuffed at the news that we are finally going to get our Z episode. Yet, it is a bittersweet moment the way all endings are. I am confident that you will give each member of our beloved airdot family a proper send-off and, I hope, a very happy future.

And as for you sir, thank you for Cabin Pressure. It has been a source of so much joy for me, my family, and all those whom I have had the pleasure of bringing into the fandot. You are a master of comedy and your characters have settled themselves squarely in my heart.

Good luck as you write. We all await with bated breath this last installment. I think it only fair to tell you that my dad has asked me at least several times a month ever since Yverdon "So has Z been recorded yet?"

I just want to thank you for making long car journeys with the kids a much more pleasant experience- instead of 'are we nearly there yet?' We get 'can we listen to more Cabin Pressure?' You have introduced my children to the joys of radio, and we will all miss the antics greatly!

Is there an alphabet that stops at Ø? The things you learn..
I would of course prefer A to Å - it could be a Scandinavian special, where you can do Æ, Ø and Å as reunion pieces.
Okay, that might just be my wishful thinking, but the point I'm trying to get to is that even if this is the end of the line - both the alphabetical and episodical (is that a word) line, it has been a BRILLIANT line, and not just some insignificant dot.
It has in fact helped me cope with severe anxiety at airports - not anxiety for flying, but what would happen after I landed.
It has made me giggle like a crazy person, so much so that I was nearly held back by airport security.
I have been passed by a yellow car on the street while having "YELLOW CAR YELLOW CAR YELLOW CAR!" sounding out through my not so soundproof headset and earning me the most delightfully odd looks.
This show has even made me laugh so hard I've fallen of my chair while making my mother laughing so hard she couldn't be bothered helping me up.
In short, I can't thank you enough for creating Cabin Pressure. I wish you the best of luck with the final episode, which I'll be listening to, conveniently situated on the floor with a box of tissues at my side.

I know that this sentiment has been expressed here many, many times but nonetheless...

I discovered CP during the second series, while I was writing my dissertation, the third series saved me while I was struggling through my masters thesis, I once listened to series 1-4 on a loop while spending days making sheep out of pom poms.

Since discovering the show it has been the answer to every sad or tiresome day, every moment of anger or frustration. The instant antidote.

While I completely understand and respect your decision to end the show, I don't think I'll be the only person who won't only be crying with laughter when we land in Zurich.

I will be doing everything in my power to get tickets and be there for the end (even though I appriciate that the extent of'everything I can do' comes down to applying for tickets, and then - in the immortal words of Mr David and Mr Bacharach-, wishin' and hopin')

However it ends, I'm sure it will be Brilliant.

Thank you for all the laughs Mr Finnemore, thank you indeed.

Hi! I've recently began Cabin Pressure, but I'm automatically in love with it. I'm waiting until Christmas to buy the next episodes. :)

I do have one question though. A lot of fans are wondering if Martin has Asperger's or Autism or something like that. Will that be resolved in the final episode? Not that it matters to me. Just curious.

By the way, I do have one favor to ask. The next time you see Benedict Cumberbatch to record the episode, can you please rely this message to him: I think he is such an amazing man/actor and his contributions to film are stunning. I truly hope he wins an Academy Award sometime soon (he deserves it). :)

Aw... it's gonna be so sad to see it end. :-( But this has honestly be THE BEST radio show I've ever heard, and I'm so happy that I got to follow it from the opposite side of the Atlantic Ocean. :-) Your writing has been nothing short of absolute genius, and even more so because you kept it completely clean humor, which is exceedingly rare nowadays. That alone deserves an award. :-)

I'm gonna miss following the lives of these characters... especially Martin, and not because of who plays him, but because you seem to have ganked my entire life story down to a scary amount of details and written it all into Martin. X-) I love it that this insane coincidence happened... in fact I'm honored to share the same life story as him, so I wanna tell you thank you for this character that I can relate to so closely, that's been brilliant. :-)

I bought every single episode on iTunes and have listened to them all multiple times, and I've even gotten a few of my friends hooked on it as well, so as heartbreaking as it is to see it end, I will be anxiously anticipating "Zurich"... and I will always be playing Yellow Car. ;-)

Mr F, judging by this outpouring of appreciation, your place in heaven is assured. When you eventually present yourself at the pearly gates, you can look St P in the eye and say, “Yes, actually, I made the world a much happier place for thousands of people”. And St P will look at you closely, then shout “OMG! Guys! It’s the bloke that wrote Cabin Pressure! And the Famous Five sketch that made Gabriel fall off his cloud laughing!” And the angels will throng excitedly, and usher you towards a shining, golden door… you’ll step through it… and find yourself onstage at the Radio Theatre at Broadcasting House with the entire cast of Cabin Pressure and the Souvenir Programme. (Look, this is my idea of heaven, OK? I’ll be second row, centre.) And that will be it for eternity – CP and JFSP, live, on a permanent loop. Although you might get a breather every couple of centuries for the cast of Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and Red Dwarf to do their thing. You can even sit in the audience with me to watch them if you like :)

I've nothing more to add except to say that Cabin Pressure has made a permanent home in my heart and that I'll be sad (but also happy) to see it to the end. You're absolutely right about stories needing a proper ending- I absolutely believe that the actors must take their bow and leave the stage when the curtain closes.

Yes, I openly admit that I came for Benedict, but through it I also found Stephanie and Roger, very fantastic actors who I've happily stayed for. This show taught me many wonderful things about British culture and appealed to my sense of humour which can rarely be satisfied by most comedies available in my home country. It was also through this show that I learnt the power and potential of audio and aural media, which matters to me and has opened doors for me as a multimedia major.

So while I'm here I'd like to thank you, Mr Finnemore. I wish you the best for this episode, as well as for all your future projects. I'll be keeping an ear out.

I can't decide whether I'm happy or sad. On one hand we will finally find out what happens in a 45 minute episode to boot and on the other... no more cabin pressure. Cabin pressure's made me laugh when I was on the verge of tears and saved me from boredom during a 14 hour car ride to visit my brother (my mom too, I made her listen and she loves it). I'd want to go to the recording but alas I am geographically and monetary impaired. Still, I'm looking forward to Zurich and anything else written by the great John Finnemore!

Well that's sad, I wanted it to carry on forever!

However it does answer a worry of mine, that the show was getting better every series and at some point it would peak. It's better to leave them wanting more as they say.

Anyway, just one little request please Mr Finnemore...will you re-record Newcastle with Benedict please? Tom was good, but Benedict is Martin and always shall be!

Thank you Mr. Finnemore for this wonderful radio comedy which has lifted my spirits during a gruelling year of study. Long haul flights are one of my pet hates in life but I (and other CP fans) would love to fly on Gertie with the MJN crew if every journey is as hilarious as each episode. Although I'm sad that the Cabin Pressure story is drawing to a close, I'm very glad that I got hooked to this show which I came across by chance on iTunes and bought the first episode. The stories, one-liners and the actors' delivery of them are...Brilliant!!!

Hope I can get a ticket, although it's going to be a bit of an expensive trip from Seattle (I won't be bringing any cattle with me). At least I can play Travelling Lemon on the way over! I agree with an earlier comment that asked for a re-recording of Newcastle. Tom was very good as Martin but Benedict IS Martin, and it would be nice to have the complete series with Benedict playing him. Thank you Mr. Finnemore, I have really enjoyed Cabin Pressure!

I will miss this crew that I love so much, but I understand wanting to end the show on top rather than going on too long. (There are always shows that I used to love and instead reach the status of "Is that *still* on?".) Like many, I came for Benedict and stayed for everyone and everything. This show has made me laugh out loud more than I would have thought possible and Arthur especially has stolen my heart. Best of luck in everything you do next. P.S. Thanks for wrapping things up with a final episode instead of leaving with a cliff-hanger.

Hi John. I wanted to thank you for an absolutely fantastic show. As a listener, I will morn the ending to the show I had come to love so much, but as a writer I can say that, as so many others have, that your timing is perfect. I live in California and have an incredibly hellish internet connection which means I must wait until it is out on itunes to listen, but I will do it with joy in my heart because you have the skill to create the fantastic ending that story deserves. Lastly,I would like to thank you for a completely different reason. Your show, in a way,has saved me. The voices of Martin, Douglass, Arthur, and Carolyn have lulled me to sleep for over a year now. The episodes weave themselves into my dreams, and instead of the usual terrifying images of everyone I love dying, I see Martin and Douglass sitting in the flight deck trying to fix some improbable situation that (Arthur most likely) got them into.

So thanks! and all my best wishes to you my friend....you really are good don't lose sight of that. This isn't the end of your genius - it is only the beginning.

There are going to be flops along the way, but you will persevere.

I'm with you every step of the way. Every failure and every victory :)

I finally managed to get CP two weeks ago and now it's ending. That's sad.

But then again, it's also a good thing. Because it has a linear story and it has a proper ending and we can have a happily ever after. (PLEASE.) And it's ending while it's the most brilliant thing ever, instead of dragging on or losing steam. It's sad, but it's a good thing. And hey, we get another episode!

And really, I have fallen so in love with these characters. I think I was a goner by "smoke in the flight deck." What makes this show special is their depth (they all have some pretty big issues, which are very nicely dealt with, especially for being a sitcom) as well as their very clearly portrayed personalities. And we care for them, so very much. It's a comedy, but it has so much heart.

You are absolutelycompletelyamazingly brilliant for writing this wonderful, wonderful show and thank you so much for taking us on this fantastic flight with the MJN family.

Please please please give them a happy ending.

And, on behalf of all your fans today, may I just say, “Geronimo!”

My guesses for the last episode of Cabin Pressure...

G-ERTI will suffer some sort of irreparable damage; my guess is that Martin will rather heroically save the day, soundly raising himself above merely "adequate."
Martin will take the SwissAir job
Martin will have at least one more date with the Princess
Carolyn will move to Zurich to live with Herc (after MJN shuts due to aforementioned bent airplane)
Douglas will retire from flying, and begin a career with Talisker
Arthur... Hell, no idea what will happen to Arthur.
Snooperdoo will continue to be a ridiculous little dog.

Me: I'll miss them all, and wish them well.

Damn it man, why did you have to have such integrity? It mirrors the quality of the show to end it with such a hefty dollop of dignity. Bravo!

Well, Mr Finnemore, I came to Cabin Pressure because I was already a fan yours and BBC comedies.
The series has provided many a long family holiday journey with delight, pleasure and laughter.
So a big thanks from me, Chris, Joe and Ben.
Hope it ends as well as Breaking Bad did. Though with fewer deaths of course.

I am 12 and I love CP and JFSP. I have introduced most of my friends and they love it too. Can't wait for Zurich... but it's the end. No more CP. I know it will be an amazing episode, but the end? Nooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Aaaaw. Looking forward to it. I'm sure it will be...brilliant.

I am sad that Cabin Pressure is ending, but glad of a final wrap-up, rather than a cliffhanger to leave us eternally wondering. Thanks for the grins, giggles and guffaws, Mr F

Do you think this would happen to MJN air in their last ever episode?

Seems like something they'd get themselves into..

Hooray for a planned exit! Someone else referenced "Breaking Bad", and I immediately thought of Vince Gilligan's decision to go out on a high note (and on his own terms) when I read this news. Thanks for introducing me to Benedict Cumberbatch - I only watched "Sherlock" because I thought, oh, the guy from Cabin Pressure is in it!

Thanks for a delightful show that I've shared with friends, coworkers, and parents - all of whom are American, all of whom fell absolutely in love with the universe you created. It's been brilliant. Cheers, Mr. Finnemore!

Thanks for everything. Love the series, love the characters, love the actors. A shame to hear it will end so soon. Shotgun first two tickets! My mum and I wait in nervous anticipation!

Please, when you do the DVD of the final episode can you put Cabin Pressure at Christmas on it as well - for those of us who bought the individual series?

This has been one of the best new shows on Radio 4 in years. At least we have the CDs to keep it going.

I tuned in originally for Roger Allam but grew to love them all.

Mr. Finnemore, I'm very sad, albeit unsurprised, to hear CP is ending. I found the show 3 years ago (yes, through Benedict's smart and generous fandom) and became instantly smitten with the beloved airdot, its denizens, and your incredible writing. I particularly enjoyed your skill with wordplay, the cast's flawless timing, AND the many Holmesian nuggets you sprinkled throughout the episodes (naturally)!

Despite being reduced to tears here in the States, I eagerly await the show's swan song in Zurich and remain confident you'll provide all our dear friends with a happy, Pozzitive ending!

Your work of genius will continue to provide laughter and love for years to come. Blessings upon you, sir!

Ok, so a very late comment on this topic, I have recently stumbled on to CP and LOVE it! I laugh out loud listening to it so much my dog thinks I've lost the plot. I was trying to find out when the next series was going to be and lo, I find this....so sad, but as others say, going out on a high is a great thing...can't wait for the episode and thank you for writing such a BRILLIANT (as Arthur would say) programme!

If Martin and Teresa got married in the air that would be BRILLIANT!!
