You might imagine that being the spring on a garden gate would be a rather boring, cheerless existence, which over the years would crush the spirit of even the most joyful soul.
I'm now having peculiar flashbacks to a very smug, self-satisfied automated door with Genuine People Personality on the Heart of Gold.
Which never looked quite as smug or self-satisfied on screen as they did in my head.
While *this*...this is more a happy and well-adjusted a gate as one I might have ever imagined. That in itself is enough to give me a bit of hope for tomorrow, which appears to already be happening there.
The way I remember it, it was Icarus who made the piloting error. Daedalus was an inventor, and I use the name in homage to the founder, sole proprietor, head cook and bottle washer of DREADCO, of whom Ariadne has written in New Scientist and Nature.
Hello, I thought I'd leave this comment here as this seemed the most appropriate post (well, because of the cheery hinge anyway):
LONG RAMBLE ALERT!
Thank you thank you thank you so much for the recording on Tuesday evening! It was gutting not to get tickets through the website, especially after how much the trains had mucked us about for getting to the try-outs, so we appreciate your kindness even more so. (And by some miracle the trains were only running 10-15mins late this time; a welcome change from outright cancellations, hoorah!) It really was a wonderful evening.
It's very difficult to find comedy that's both clean and funny, which is why we really enjoy your work - I actually pulled muscles at Cabin Pressure recordings, the try-outs, and indeed on Tuesday! I particularly enjoyed the Messenger, Evolutionist-except-when-it-comes-to-small-cute-things, CatNav, Jekyll and Hyde, Archers ... actually, the vast majority of the sketches. [So much for constructive feedback.] And I *still* have "don't press the button on that light blue bollard" going round and round my head! (The first time it's a little annoying; the millionth time it's soul-destroying ... )
I'm very glad to have been able to thank you in person after the recording, but I didn't want to take too much of your time - my apologies for rambling now, but I'm a firm believer in letting people know when they and their efforts are appreciated, and we certainly are very grateful that we were able to come on Tuesday :)

Blimey, these muscle relaxants don't half work.
Aw, that's sweet! I am in awe of your eye for detail.

ReplyDeleteApparently not!
I do love "things with face" :)
ReplyDeleteTo be honest that smile looks like it's got a ton of mood stabilizers and psychotherapy sessions behind it...
ReplyDeleteWell that's just adorable!
ReplyDeleteIt's been taking those gateway drugs...
ReplyDeleteOkay, now that's a shame...a pun as perfect as "gateway drugs" and the credit only goes to Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteIt was me. I was in too much of a hurry to do a name at the time.
ReplyDelete"You intentionally named your Blogger identity after the worst pilot ever?"
ReplyDeleteGlad you claimed it. Well done!

ReplyDeleteOf course you're right. My mistake. It was Icarus who got all icky with melted wax.
ReplyDeleteDunno about DREADCO, so I've lost the thread of this. I'll Google it.
Smiley.
ReplyDeleteJohn, you are an utter sweetie. I wish I were more like you.
ReplyDeleteThat is an Arthur gate if I ever saw one.

Oh god, a 6am start to the day with an edit, just seen this and have tears streaming down my face with laughter, thank you.
