Well, it's here... yes, it's here...

Happy Fifth of February! Here's a little song Susannah Pearse and I wrote in honour of this deeply unspecial day...

(Yes, I know it's some peoples' birthdays. Doesn't make it any more special, I'm afraid. Every day is some peoples' birthdays.)

However, this particular Fifth of February is at least a fraction merrier than most, because today is the launch of the complete and utter definitive A to Z Cabin Pressure CD box set! Here they are, all fourteen of them:

The discs include:

- All 26 episodes (well, technically 27, but I like to think of Zurich as one two-part episode. It's just neater) in correct, alphabetical order.

- A bonus half hour in which producer David interviews me, mainly about odd little references in the show; and we introduce such things as:

- Some deleted clips and scenes, including Martin and Douglas talking about their fathers in St Petersburg, and Martin X-raying the geese at the end of Uskerty.

- The little monologues I wrote just for the audience at the very first recording, in which each character introduces themselves.

- Two specially written trailers for series 2 of the show, one featuring Stephanie, the other Benedict.

- One 'blooper'. I know you wanted more, but for some reason they generally don't really come across in audio only.  But this one does, and it's a good one...

Then there's the 32 page booklet, which includes:

- Casting and transmission details of all the episodes, obviously.

- Strange little doodles, by me, of things like oboes and green bottles and stuffed sheep and cricketers carrying a fire-truck, all around the above.

- A hand-drawn world map of all the destinations, also by me.

- An annotated diagram of the layout of Gerti; including secret location of the asbestos gloves; untampered with armrests; and the captain's seat for the captain to sit in, because he's the captain. Yep, me again.

- The official MJN Air Games Compendium - a list of all the games played by the crew through the show.

- The Rules of The Travelling Lemon.

- The Rules of Yellow Car. Well, the rule.

- The five double page spreads, one for each main character, showing their notebooks, wall charts, manuals or diaries; as published in the individual CD releases, but now in glorious technicolour, which means Arthur's jelly-babies are finally recognisable, and don't just look like weird stones.

- Eleven hidden lemons.

- A page of plot ideas which never made it into episodes, with explanations as to why not.

- A page of my notebook from the writing of Zurich.

- A double page spread of photos of the cast rehearsing and recording Zurich.

- Two high quality staples (used)

So, yes. We tried to pull out all the stops for this. Hope you like it. If you want to discover whether you like it or not, you can do so by buying it from Pozzitive, the BBC, high street book and music shops, or even big bad Amazon:

FAQ

I already have the CDs! Can I get Zurich separately, or are you trying to make me buy the whole show all over again, you gang of twisters?

Not at all. Both series 4 and Zurich are available to buy separately, like so:

What about the booklet and the bonus material? Can I get that separately?

I don't think so, no. But that's fair enough, isn't it? That's what 'bonus material' means.

Will it be released in America? Or the rest of the world?

It's definitely going to be released in America, we think in April. I don't know about the rest of the world. But you can always order it from Britain and get it shipped to you.

I am young, and have never even heard of CDs. Are they those things Victorians played on gramophones, in their zeppelins?

That's right, yes. You can of course also still get all of Cabin Pressure by download, from iTunes or wherever else you get your music.

Why are you using Amazon links? Don't you know they're the baddies?

Because they tend to have the cheapest price, and it seems unfair not to point at the cheapest price. Also, because they're the single source most likely to have it in stock. The BBC shop, for instance, is currently sold out, even though it's the day of release. But you are of course welcome to buy it from whatever shop your taste and conscience dictate.

Is this the longest blog post you've ever written?

I don't know. It's right up there, isn't it?

Don't you feel bad that it's essentially just a huge long advert?

...Well, I didn't. But now I do. There's the song, though! Don't forget it started with a song!

We'd already heard the song.

Oh, leave me alone.

So wonderful to come home to this. Already introduced family to yellow car and the travelling lemon. I don't often buy CDs of comedy shows ISIRTA being the other But had to have this

  10. Having been a Cabin Pressure devotee from the very first airing of 'Abu Dhabi', I've been buying the CDs as they came along, and I was delighted to hear my copy of 'Zurich' plop onto the doormat this morning. I'm sad to miss out on the extras from the A-Z set, but am happy that I've contributed to keeping Mr Finnemore in bathrobes and cycling kit over the past few years.

Bravo, once more, John. You really have created something very, very special.

  11. I'm still waiting for mine to dispatch (Amazon tell me since the morning that they are "preparing" it - but maybe they have to learn the phonetic alphabet and find out what is inside a certain box while doing so...), and then I'll be waiting again, pondering the funny routes parcels from B (like Britain) to A (like Austria) tend to take (for a change, this sounds more mathsy than it actually is). But I'm convinced it will be worth the wait - in fact, with the list above, I am a little extra (or bonus?) excited now (especially for the staples, they sound like great fun!). Therefore: Can't wait, but will have to - what a linguistical conundrum.

  19. Received mine on the day of release, and have rarely been as pleased to see something land on the doormat. Worth buying for the bonus material alone, as every snippet of Cabin Pressure is invaluable.
Hopefully my Amazon review helps boost sales. I've tried to be as objective as I can. And failed miserably!

  21. Categorically my best and favourite purchase of 2015 so far. The bonus interview is marvellous, with all the little insights etc., and the booklet is just what I hoped for and more. Thank you so much for the perfect box set of the best thing on radio in thirty years!

Hi there John.I did not have a merry Fifth of February because I kept getting lost on the bus route home. However I did hum your song obnoxiously while waiting for the bus. Oh, and also I, a Canadian listener from Ontario purchased your lovely CD pack from Amazon specifically so I can lend it out to friends and force them to listen to it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anonymous2:44 am

So the song sounds like you are mocking the lame and self-indulgent singing Garrison Keillor did on Prairie Home Companion. If so, well done; it always made me cringe.

Thanks for eveything that you included as a bonus on this set. i look forward to it. Just to let you know how highly I rate your show: I have been in a spending freeze for years, underemployed since the recession started in 2008. There are only 3 performances I bought in that time. The Sherlock DVDs, the Karl Richter DVD of Bach's Brandenburg concertos (it's not available as a CD and is my most favorite version, especially the 5th) and the AudioGo Cabin Pressures. This box set will make that list soon.

I have just finished listening to Zurich on CD.
It is ingenious, funny and sour-sweet as a story. It ties up all the loose ends, including providing a Papagena, and on one of its metaphorical levels gently insists on the pre-eminence of the writer, when Douglas, the inventor, the fixer, Daedalus, is acknowledged captain. I liked it very much. Congratulations.

  29. So many people have written something along these lines before me and I'm not especially good with words in English "as I am not the native speaker", but I still have to add my voice to the utterly deserved downpour of praise:

Thank you so much for the whole of Cabin Pressure! It is, in a word, BRILLIANT - and Zürich is just such a perfect ending, rounding it off superbly.

(I'm a bit sorry for the good old van though, but at least it went to the hands of someone who appreciates slightly off - or even very off - Disney characters, so maybe at least Arthur's infamous mural will be preserved in some way).

I'm pretty sure you'll not be resting on your laurels (or hardys), and so am looking forward to the 5th series of Souvenir Programme and the occasional Youtube clip! Until then, once more, thanks for all the airbourne hilarity! :-)

  30. I got my box set, and I'm very pleased with it, except for one thing: CD13 (the one with Yverdon-Les-Bains and Zurich Part 1) doesn't seem to have been properly electronically labeled when it was created. iTunes can't find the metadata for it, and as a result all the tracks are coming up as "Track 1", "Track 2" etc., instead of with their proper titles.

I've asked around (via tumblr) and everyone I've talked to says their CD13 is the same. Would it be possible for you to make a post with the proper track names from the 13th disk, so we can all update our track listings manually?

    Thanks in advance! :)

  31. Well, February the Fifth IS my birthday. Loved the present though, it's much better than a pair of silly socks or pencil holder. Top it off with "Zurich" and that's the best birthday gift ever.

I love Cabin Pressure deeply - it´s best antidepressant ever and you Mr. Finnemore are BRILLIANT! Douglas says, that no one's interested in the secret of true cheeriness - I don´t agree, I was interested and now I know the answer - just spend enough time with MJN crew and that´s it :-D Many greetings from Czech republic and thank you for so much joy :-)

  36. I have just binge listened to the entire box set over the course of a weekend of tidying.

A couple of years ago, I spent a lot of time driving to hospital to visit my (now late, because not everyone gets a fairytale ending) partner in intensive care. I was a ball of misery and fear but I can still remember having to pull over in a snowstorm because I was near hysterical with laughter listening to Cabin Pressure. I think it was fizz, buzz that did it.

Thank you for the tidy flat and for a bright memory in the middle of an an otherwise bleak time.

And I am always playing Yellow Car, even if my kids are rolling their eyes and my new American friends (I made Minnesota my home) are urged NOT to ask me about it, or the matching t-shirt. John - you are a national treasure. Stay gold.

    Hello
I'm from Wokingham..Honest, we lived on the finchampstead road in half a house cos that's all you can afford if you're from the north.
We are purveyors of trinkets, pretty baubles and the like and last year whilst at a four week Christmas fayre, inspired by the traveling lemon, invented the social teacup. A simple game where you ask a passing member of the public to take a old, cold cup of tea to a neighbouring trader who receives it solemnly, engages the now potential customer in light sales banter and considers who to pass it onto. The only rule is that you cannot be challenged and on day nine achieved a rally of 17.
    I thank you

Is it appropriate to be promoting "funny stories" about an airliner crew that is clearly unstable and has mental issues at a time like now?

Given that an unstable and likely mentally ill crew has just killed 250 people using an airliner as the weapon.

I decided to preorder from Amazon.com in the US rather than Amazon.co.uk, even though it would take a little longer (because I am a cheap bastard and this way I could afford another set as a gift for my godson who is the reincarnation of Martin Crief). Unfortunately there seems to be some problem getting the disks to float across the Pacific. Can you confirm that this release is not a "limited edition" and that it will not be replaced with a more boring set without all the extras? I can be patient if I know it will get here eventually, but if not I will go shopping in the UK

Hi John. I hate to be a rabbit of negative euphoria, but I fear I just encountered some news that is singularly unpleasant, and I thought you might want to look into it. It seems as though Blackstone Audio the company that said they would release your charming creation to the charming people of North America had a deal that fell through with the BBC at around the first of April. I do not have much to verify this, other than a questionable Amazon review and the fact that the couple of vendors I checked said that they ran out of stock on April 1. Sorry for the super long comment. A Tim from Canada

  53. An absolute treat, literally, as this was a birthday present for me a few months ago.

I was already a fan of the series, but I love the extras you get in this set - I seem to spot new things every time. Obviously the program is the important thing, but I wish every BBC release showed as much passion as this, for example the box set of 'In & out of the kitchen' didn't even have a track list.

As well as the physical extras it was great to hear the interview episode which gave so many insights. I previously wondered why the audience laughed so much when Martin's brother picked him up!

Overall I love the series but have to say the quality dropped a bit towards the end. I found something to enjoy in every episode but I have to say I struggled with Qikiaqtarjuaq (just too silly) and Zurich. I can jussssttt about cope with the Princess Teresa 'device'.

It's crammed full of gags but here are the examples that made me laugh (or at the very least grin broadly while chopping onions) were, and still are:

"-how long can a panther survive in an aeroplane hold?
-Oh I used to know this one."

"I'm more of a crazy guy you know"

    Fantastic work, thanks.

(great drawings in your blog - are any of your Cabin Pressure drawings for sale?)
