Cabin Pressure IV - prepare for boarding.

Arthur Shappey. A serious man, with a serious announcement, and a serious face.

Bing bong. I have Cabin Pressure news. Yes, actual news! Not just news about when we hope to know when we might get news, but the news itself. All of it.  Are you ready? Ok. Here is the news.

*Shuffles papers. Looks serious.*

The new series of Cabin Pressure will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 for six weeks starting Wednesday the 9th of January, 2013.  The cast is unchanged.

There will be three recordings. They will all be at the RADA studios in London, at 1:30 pm, on the following dates: Sunday the 2nd of December; Sunday the 16th December and Sunday the 6th of January.

You will be able to apply for free tickets to the recordings on this site, probably in two or three days time. (A tip - if past experience is anything to go by, there will be quite a short window between applications being opened and closed, so if you're keen, keep an eye on the site.) Applications will then be entered into a draw, and successful applicants will be emailed and sent their tickets.

I've been really touched by, and grateful for, all the excitement and interest people have shown about the show, here and at the try-outs, and I wish there was more I could do to help you get tickets. Unfortunately, there just isn't - partly because the BBC Ticket Unit control the draw, not me or Pozzitive, and partly because if I started, where would I stop? So all I can do is wish you the very best of luck, and hope to see you there!

Oh, one other thing - the ticket unit tend to issue more tickets than there are seats, because often people with free tickets don't turn up. Last series, this lead to a lot of people with tickets being turned away at the door, which I absolutely hate. I've asked them very nicely not to over-cater by much this time round, and I hope they listen. But even so, do bear in mind getting a ticket doesn't guarantee entry. If it was me, for instance, I would think twice before travelling a long way to see it.

Anyway, this has got very gloomy. The main thing is, we've got recording dates, we've got transmission dates, and there will be more Cabin Pressure in two months time!

Now all I have to do is finish writing it.

I knew there was something.

Best news ever! Even if we don't all get in, we can still throw a hell of a line party. I'll bring the lemon.

YEAH!!!! Brilliant!!! Maybe we can get those pressing questions answered.

Will Martin get a paycheck?
How tall is Martin and what does his hairline look like?
What is going on between Caroline and Hurk?
Will Mr. Burling ever get to enjoy his Talasker whiskey?
Where is the latest airfield pub?

Even though I love Cabin Pressure, I'm in two minds whether to brave the nightmare of ticket applications and potential queueing madness. I've really enjoyed the recordings that I've managed to attend, but knowing that the large volume of scary Cumberbatch fangirls that populates the listening audience will increase again this year, I'm not sure I can brave the madness of queueing from stupid-o'clock in the morning to get a seat! (Admittedly, I am also something of a fangirl, but I try so hard not to be a scary one and most of them scare me!)

Yay! But I can only make one of the dates (being actory the other days) But the one I can do (6th Jan) is the day after my birthday! What a birthday prezzie that would be! I'll be stalking the BBC site now and even if the BBC Gods don't smile on me at least I get CP on the radio as a late birthday present. :-)

I don't care that I'll be travelling a long way, if, big if, if I get a ticket, I will be there! :D

If not, cannot wait to hear it once again, although the other episodes are classics, I still laugh awkwardly to myself on the train, bus, tube and car...

Good luck with the writing of it!

I knew spending time on the Internet rather than writing notes in my ar haeology class would be worth it. I'm one of the (very) many Americans absolutely besotted with your show, and now I can't quite contain my excitement. So, uh, hooray!
Also, I'll wait patiently for more from your Souvenir Programme. Very patiently. Very, very patiently.

Yay! Great news, and thanks so much for interceding with the ticket department on our behalf. The queueing situation is way ot of control for popular shows, I gave up when the queuing time exceeded the time spent in the actual recording! Seems to me that almost everyone given tickets * does* turn up...

Anonymous said...

Great news, even though I won’t be in London at any of these dates... is there any possibility you could fetch me with a private MJN flight? I am definitely a better cook than Arthur, promised! No? Thought so. I might consider going to the local zoo instead (in a yellow car), watch some otters and les bears polar and drink some delicious traveling lemonade.

Yeah… I am a bit too excited at the moment. Wednesday will become my favourite day of the week (I normally dislike Wednesdays, nearly as bad as Mondays…). Thank you!!!

Talk of tickets reminds me of Spike Milligan's BBC Commissionaire sketch:

Man: I have a ticket here for a show.

Commissionaire: That's not good enough! You can't come in here until you've been kept standing in the pouring rain for three hours, so no matter how bad the show is, you're grateful!

Man: Well I have been waiting for two hours, and I have got pneumonia.

Comm: Oh good, you can come in!

This is great news!I have listened to CP soooo many times. My favourite episodes I almost know by heart (Fitton, Paris, Ottery St Mary...).Can´t wait for the new episodes!!!
I´m not sure if we can come all the way from Germany. (But we already had a lovely evening in the Kilburn Priory in April).
Have you ever thought about doing a (I don´t know if that´s a proper English word for it) live-audio-play? In Germany there is a popular audio play: "Die Drei Fragezeichen". You can buy it on CD here, there are more than 150 episodes. The cast did a live-tour two years ago: There were just the three speakers, some supporting speakers, a foley artist and some microphones on a stage. It was not like Theatre, they just read their texts into a microphone. It was an old episode and everybody in the audience(including me)knew most of the text by heart. 11.000 people came to see them in Hamburg and even more came to Berlin! It was great and very funny! Maybe something like that only works in weird Germany. But I thought...so many people would love to come even from very far away to see you guys reading a text into a microphone...
I think there are enough people to fill a biggerish theatre or concert hall...AND you could even sell the proper amount of tickets! Like a Priory Engagement, only bigger. Please?

Savani said...

Oh wow, this is wonderful news! I can't wait to listen to the new episodes! All the best with the recordings.

Psst - For every excited fan who wants to re-listen to the whole series before the premiere, it works out perfectly.

If you begin with Episode 1 on Nov 15 (today) and listen to a new episode every three days exactly, you'll end by listening to the 19th and final episode on Jan 8, just in time for the new series!

I'm starting right now. Happy listening!

As I'm in Dublin, I won't be going, but - how many people were turned away last time? Maybe there could be a Facebook page or something to organise a TAFCP (Turned Away From Cabin Pressure) Party. And it could be later joined by the NTAFCP (Not Turned Away From Cabin Pressure) Party. That way, instead of meandering off into the gloom to feel rejected, people could get drunk and quote at each other.

I live close enough for the travel to be easily doable, but I am nervous of the (very lovely, I'm sure!) more enthusiastic audience members, so my gift to those who are applying for tickets is - I will not apply! That makes your chance of getting one just a little bit better! :-)

I hope you manage to get all the writing finished, John, but if there are any gaps, you could play some soothing music or perhaps some aeroplane noises...

I am currently quite depressed and nothing really seems to touch me, but I honestly have to say that this news made me smile for the first time in ages. Really, this might sound pathetic, but I feel like I have something to look forward to come the New Year now.

If the next series is half as funny as some of these posts it will be hilarious. I detect just a hint of hyperactivity, hysteria and, in at least one case, nausea. Best keep the audience away from too many fizzy drinks and crisps beforehand or it could get messy.

Incidentally, I got rather unnecessarily giggly the other day when I received a giant dark chocolate Toblerone.

Good luck and a following wind for the remaining days of sweat and tears writing before recording starts. :))

I'm so glad to hear about the new series of Cabin Pressure!

I thought I'd let you knew that I was listening to the 6th episode of John Finnemore's Souvenir Program, doing boring household chores, and as the anti-PC man began insisting he wouldn't recycle until all the Chinese do, I was outside my apartment in Beijing while my neighbors and I sorted our recycling.
It made it that much better for me, though I did look pretty crazy, laughing apparently at nothing.

Anyway, I'm really excited to hear more of your writing soon!

Looks like series five will have to be recorded at Wembley Stadium!

Anonymous said...

looks like the tickets are now up on the BBC site.

Anonymous said...

Ticket applied for...fingers crossed for an early Christmas present care of BBC!

Anastasia said...

And as usual you can't apply if you are not from UK. Unfair. Yeah...

Elliot said...

Just applied! Hopefully I'll get a chance to go!

Anonymous said...

Just applied, keep my fingers cross. And if it works out hopefully I don't have to work.

Britta said...

Really glad hearing/reading this! WOW!! Will follow your kind advice and NOT try to get a ticket... Would LOVE to see pictures or a nice video from the recordings later on, though... Hoping you have a heart for us poor foreigners ... ;-)

Brilliant!!

When I saw that long comment above and at first glance saw it was about hair, I assumed it was going to be a detailed and appreciative analysis of Mr Finnemore's hair in that rather dashing new picture.
But as it turns out, no.

ClosetDiva (aka Kate K) said...

To quote Arthur (and a few other posts): BRILLIANT!!!
I'm on the wrong side of the Pond to attend any recordings, but will definitely be looking forward to the new series!
(Confession: I keep listening to CP on my morning commute and can highly recommend it as the best way to keep smiling. Especially if, like me, you're not a morning person.)

cora678 said...

Oh yes, Kate, I know this. I hear it when biking to the office in the morning. A nice way to cheer me up, because I am in a natural state of grumpiness on this time of the day. But with CP on the headphones I smile. And laugh out loud. Or words like 'Hooray!' or 'Oh no!' slip out. Loudly. On cycling tracks. While waiting for green traffic lights. In the lift (THAT was embarrassing...).
So on my way to work I am not the lunatic anymore that snarls at cars or bikes that dare to overtake her and yells at every pedestrian that carelessly strolls on the cycling track. No - now I am the lunatic that talks to herself in a strange language and burst into fits of laughter for no obvious reason. Well, kind of improvement... somehow... ish.
Thanks CP!
And thank you John for the phrase 'Go away. Go away now. Go away fast!' which is very helpful when the old grumpiness strikes again. And soon there will be more! Hoooray!!
Reeaally excited regards from Germany,
Corinna

Captain Martin Crieff, thrilled by the Chi Hair Straightener's ceramic engineering and ten-foot cord, was profoundly disappointed to discover, after further reading, that the device has no adaptor for universal travel, and can be used in all its astounding ceramically engineered glory only in Canada and the United States. Arthur Shappey may buy two or three anyway, just in case, because straightening one's locks in Qikiqtarjuaq would be brilliant!

pekay said...

"The Chi hair straightener is also incredibly gentle fat and desirable to the eye"

That's very much how I think of myself, too.

(Blogmaster Finnemore, I know it's spam, but it is, you must admit, a literary delight. Can you bring yourself to destroy something so charming?)

GG said...

This part conjures up some interesting images of poor non-Chi users being hopelessly caught in a cat's cradle of electrical cords, but am I the only one that thinks ten feet isn't really that much to boast about?

"The ten foot cord that routinely will come with the Chi hair straightener is a wonderful addition for any one who does not have a ton of electrical outlets in their properties and there is a 360 diploma swivel relationship which permits the consumer of a Chi hair straightener to not be trapped up in cords whilst straightening their hair."

Anonymous said...

@Kate and Cora: I agree completely. As a commuter myself I listen to CP on my way home - there's nothing more relaxing than shaking off a day with laughter. In the beginning I used to hide behind a large newspaper but I decided not to care if I embarrass myself. I can't help it anyway and a newspaper is not always at hand. And hey, why not let other people have fun with CP, too?

more accents for Martin!
more singing for Douglas!
more Toblerone for Arthur!
more dates with Herc for Caroline!

Hooray!!! Sooo excited to hear the news! John Finnemore is brilliant and the Cabin Pressure cast feels like family now that we've shared so many hours travelling together in the car; okay, so maybe it was like having rambunctious, misbehaving kids in the back seat, but still...! ;) Cried big figurative tears when we'd heard the last episode! Considering changing our American citizenship to increase the odds of attending a CP taping, lol! Thank you! :D

I feel sure that Mr Finnemore could write something in to the last episode of the upcoming six mentioning the Chi Hair Straightener. Nothing is beyond his genius. Perhaps this is why Martin is so attached to his hat?

Anonymous said...

Do not care that I live a million miles away I will happily sing the proclaimers all the way down south to see this if I am so lucky to acquire tickets. Funniest show around! EEEEEEEK.

P.s. For some reason I really want a Chi hair straightener. Effective advertising, especially if you read that essay in Roger Allam's dulcet tones-wait, what am I thinking?-BC's probably already down to do the voiceover, that man get's around! I've already bought a Sony NEX-5RK, Hiscox Insurance, a Jaguar and Pedigree dogfood...I can't drive and I don't have a dog.

Omg Chi hair straightener joy!

"whilst there could possibly be a person downside" Anyone else imagine a borrower at this point?

"the pros be greater than the cons."

They be greater. And pirates like them, arg.

Mr. Finnemore, this accidental comedy delight is distracting us from your news!

Learning the news about CP series 4 MADE my holiday in Sweden!

CP fans left queueing out in the cold --or stranded in the wrong countries or continents--should besiege the BBC to film and air the CP radio recording sessions with its devoted audience and then make radio history showing it on countless TVs,

Mr Finnemore: Please as a consolation prize for the multitudes who cannot make it into London for the recording, would you please draw a full-sized label for 25-year old Talisker Scotch that we can print and paste on the cheap scotch bottle of our choice? You might do a back label too, with information about the fictional distillery, which I imagine in the part of the Catholic Orkneys.

Lastly I nominate you for the Nobel Peace Prize-- you are infinitely more worthy a recipient than the benighted European Union;
--if not the Nobel Prize for Economics, for your now immortal "restauronomic" explanation of the Eurocrisis . . . quoted by heart by faculty and students in the halls of the LSE as well as the Harvard School of Business. . .

Floreat Finnemore in aeternam !

Kaye said...

How early would you recommend turning up if I am lucky enough to get tickets? 1 Hour? 2 hours? I'm hoping to get tickets for the last show as that is my Mums birthday and it would be a fantastic birthday present for her but I would hate to get the tickets and then disappoint her by not getting let in.

Anonymous said...

No tickets available for those of us willing to make the trek from the US? I'm heartbroken!

Anonymous said...

Dear Anonymous on holiday in Sweden

Sorry to disillusion you but Talisker is not fictional! It is produced by the only Single Malt Distillery on Skye, so Western Isles and presumably Protestant? It's near a place called Carbost on Loch Harport. Lots of pics on Google Earth. The 20 and 25 year olds are indeed around the £200 per bottle mark, so no wonder Douglas is keen to purloin it.

The website is still open for people applying for tickets even though it said it would close at 10pm yesterday. It's been open for so long I've little hope left of getting a ticket as ssssssoooooooo many people will have applied. Looks like I'll have to plan something else for my birthday :-( Looks like people going to next weeks show won't be given much notice if they've not even closed it yet.

Anonymous said...

Yes, it is still open even as I write at 5.32 pm GMT. I think my chances of getting a ticket are diminishing by the second and not much notice for those lucky enough to get tickets for Dec 2nd. Get on with Beeb and put us out of our misery.

Fantastic news, so looking forward to the new year. Well done pulling it all together.

Hmm, apparently people have emails regarding the first 2 shows. Not I, sadly :-( If anyone has a spare for the 16th (The only day I'm in London from Australia!) please get in touch (@dr_mikki on twitter, or loitering here stalking John :P ) and I promise to repay you in dinner/drinks/poor attempts at CP character impersonations :-D

Noooo really? I didn't receive anything either :-\
Well, I know it's a veeeeery long shot, but if someone has a spare for the 2nd of December... :D

I haven't heard anything yet. It would absolutely make my year if I get tickets, but I imagine loads have applied! Good luck to all of us, and congratulations to the lucky ones, whoever they are!

Sarah (The other one) said...

Heard nothing yet, and perhaps the odds against rise as the applications still open ... :¬( Looks like I am not lucky this time. Would happily supply flask of coffee and company in the queue for anyone on any date with spare ticket.

Fingers still crossed

What a great news, indeed! New episodes!!!I really want to thank you wholeheartedly for all the smiles and laughs your brilliant work presented me with!Cabin pressure brightens my way to and from work in public transport. My only concern is that people in subway might get the impression that i'm not quite sane for I have huge smile plastered across my face and Lol-ing a lot (which obviously in enormously big Russia is percieved rather strangely). In those moments I wish all the people with sad troubled faces around me could hear what I hear. That undoubtedly would bring their spirits up! All of the characters are utterlty splendid! I feel so sorry sometimes for Martin, Douglas is beyond words-each phrase he says just sends you rolling on the floor, Caroline is so sharp and Arthur..is so..Arthur..but nothing can spoil that spirit! Thanks a lot again. All the best in all your projects! May the inspiration be always with you. Looking forward for more!
P.S. I have really hard times at the moment and your creation helps me a lot. KR, Margarita

Can anyone confirm whether the BBC has sent out emails regarding the January date. It is rather frustrating that the BBC don't send out messages of a failed ticket request. I can guess the reasons why they don't...

Hi John, really looking forward to the new series! Don't have a twitter account, so I hope you see this. Re: Douglas' age, in 1.05 Douglas says his first stag do was in Soho in 1977. Hope this helps! Best wishes and speedy writing from New Mexico.
