Thank you for the thank yous!

Sorry if this is a rather self-indulgent post, but I really do have to thank the extraordinary and talented fans of Cabin Pressure for some of the astonishingly creative ways they've been saying thank you since the final recording.

First, this wonderful video. Never have so many people, in so many places and in so many languages, done quite so many silly things with so many lemons, hats, yellow cars and Toblerones. I absolutely love it (and the Arthur-in-a-box it came with) - thank you all so much!

Not only that, but the organisers of it have also been fund-raising for the National Literacy Trust , an excellent cause for which they have raised an amazing £2,265, and counting! Thank you so much to everyone who donated, and for the lovely comments on that site, all of which I have read.

Next, at the recording I was given a copy of this incredible book, which is a compilation of the work of some extremely talented artists and cartoonists, and their portrayals of everything from Carolyn presenting Herc with Finn McCool III, to Martin in the back of the goose truck, to the crew's favourite meals to… well, to what the crew would look like if they were all cats. It's absolutely tremendous, though I am sickened by how much better than me at drawing you all are.

Last but not least, thank you for all the individual cards and letters that have been sent to me, or given to me at the recording. They mean an awful lot, and I will reply to all the ones with return addresses eventually - sorry if it takes a while.

Maybe everyone who writes a show thinks this, but I really do feel the people who like my show are an unusually talented, generous, thoughtful and, above all, deeply silly lot. Thank you so much! You are truly… (here it comes, I've been using similes all through this post so I can save it up for the end)… Brilliant!

UPDATE: Since I first posted this, I have also been shown this wonderful song.  Thank you!

Cabin Pressure and Souvenir Programme are the only radio shows I have aggressively forced on people and every one of them think they're great. If I'm ever down, I can pop an episode on and it will always cheer me up. I was in a minor car accident last year (I wasn't injured but my car looks like it's been through the apocalypse now) and I decided I would marathon Cabin Pressure at work that week and it made me forget about what a huge mess my life was at the moment. Thank you so much for being a great writer and for bringing so much joy into people's lives.

Listened to Paris on 4 Extra yesterday, forgot how brilliant(!) and funny it was. I couldn't figure out how Douglas had done it… absolutely genius programme, brilliant performances and of course, hilariously funny. Thank you from Lincoln!

Cabin Pressure, I feel, is one of those timeless shows - I will probably be listening to it years from now and still laughing myself silly! Thank you John for all the joy you've brought to me and countless others over the past few years.

Of course, thanks to Cabin Pressure, I got hooked onto the Souvenir Programme. I cannot wait to hear the next series, and any other projects you've got lined up for the future.

PS - Hope you caught that message from your mum on the fundraising page. ;)

You, sir, are Brilliant. (Don't tell Mrs Dimmidge that I misused capitalization.)

John,
Without your deeply silly writing none of these efforts would have existed.
As someone who "encouraged" her family to the top of a windy Avon Gorge close to Christmas with lemons, a bizarrely decorated umbrella, a picture you can't even see and a greeting learned by all in purest Bristolian, I can only say I'm really glad you enjoyed the Thank You Cabin Pressure film. It is a testament to your inspiring work.
Thank you sir.

Cabin Pressure is a truly one of a kind series, so creative, so witty, so warm and affectionate (if you aren't Martin, or sometimes Arthur), so utterly Brilliant that even superlatives don't do it justice. Your talent is stunning - thank you so much for completing the alphabet.

One plea: would you keep in mind the idea of an occasional catch up with the crew? Christmas specials? One-offs to mark key events?

You are lovely, and an absolute joy to read and hear. My kids and I have been having a very rough couple of years, and Cabin Pressure has become an important part of our lives. I think the three of us can quote considerable portions verbatim, and we use lines from it in normal (?) conversation. Thank you, John and crew, for your fantastic work.

Thank you so much for Cabin Pressure...nothing cheers me up better when I'm down! I played a couple of episodes to my family and half way through the first episode they wer ein love. Once again, THANK YOU, you are fantastic! :)

Once again Thank You for that heartwarming blog post! I loved reading you had a chance to go through both videos and our gift to the National Literacy Trust is one that comes from the heart!

YOU are one of the most talented writers I have ever had the privilege to come across. The levels of humor you can intertwine into a coherent unit, the amazing characters you can bring to life and the wonderful stories that are entertaining, intelligent and deeply moving at the same time - all of it just leaves me in otter (sic) awe! :-)

Thank you for your thank you for our thank yous...we could all go on like this indefinitely!
I'm so grateful to those who made it possible for us to thank you, and to share the joy with each other around the world.
Hope you've had half the blast making the show that we have had listening to it. (I suspect you have)
So - Thank you John(did I say that already?) It's been Br....(you know what)

Whenever I am having one of my really bad days, I lock myself away in my room and put on Cabin Pressure. No matter what I am going through it never stops making me smile and laugh. I cannot thank you enough for creating this and for finding the most incredible cast to bring it to life. I was very lucky to see X and Y being recorded and to meet you afterwards. You are a lovely man and I think that is why you have such fantastic fans. Thank you. x

Thank you so much, John, your work brings a smile in our hearts even when life is slightly less brilliant! Ourselves were very blessed to be flying MJN Air with yourselves :)

I was so proud to have been one of the artists in the book. We all just wanted to let you know how much we love the show, and everything you've created. Even when it ends, the fans will remain - I've started my nephews on it already! I'm sad it's ending, but it's ending on a high, so I have to thank you now for everything you've done for us.

Becca Robson said...

Yeah we are the best fans! Also I need a copy of that book in my life.

No Mr. Finnemore - Thank YOU for creating this wonderful show. It is one of my favorite things in the world, and I can probably quote whole episodes by heart.

I have become a pusher for this show - practically every single person that I know has been forced to listen to Cabin Pressure at one time or another. I once played Qikiqtarjuaq for my friend while she was driving, and she almost ran off the road during Martin's "Le Bear Polar" speech because she was laughing so hard.

Thank you for the all the laughter, these wonderful characters and frankly the best thing to ever hit the radio waves.

Puskissa said...

Thank you for great show which truly is brilliant.

The only thing with Cabin Pressure is that when you listen to it in public people treat you like you were crazy because of the uncontrollable laughing fits :P (On the other hand that's a great way to get a lonely seat in a rush-hour underground train.)

womble42 said...

Thanks for this post John! As one of the participants in the video I'm so pleased to read how much you loved it! Aki did a fantastic job putting it all together and even doing the gift presentations to the cast on film so we could all see you receive the DVDs and figures.

I think that it's only the best shows which inspire fans to use their talents (well, in my case, deep silliness!), and for a radio sitcom I'd imagine such an enthusiastic global fanbase is pretty much unheard of.

We all know this is down to your amazing writing and acting talent, and I shall continue to share the joys of Cabin Pressure (and Souvenir Programme) with anyone I know who will listen!

As the press have been very keen to remind us recently, many people first discovered Cabin Pressure because of Mr Cumberbatch, but the fans (and the series itself) stayed because of an even greater talent - you!

Thank you!

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much for all the hours of laughter! I missed out on going to a recording every single time I applied but it doesn't matter because the Martin, Douglas, Arthur and Caroline I see in my head are different to the owners of their voices anyway! "Thank you" really can't express how much your show has meant to me over the years but I think I can best explain it by the fact that through Cabin Pressure you have unknowingly, genuinely, saved a life. Thank you again!

Helena said...

Thank you so much for Cabin Pressure!!!!!!! If laughter really is the best medicine you have saved more lives than penicillin. I cannot tell you how much it means to me, or how much it has cheered me up over the years. Whatever happens to you, I think I speak on behalf of all Cabin Pressure fans out there when I say that thousands of us owe you as much happiness, brilliance and lemons as we can give. Thank you so much for brightening our lives!

Pipit said...

Thank you, John and Cabin Pressure! You've helped me get through some stressful times and given me new perspectives on things.

I've learned that just because someone may not be a great intellect, they may be worth more than a thousand geniuses in caring and good cheer. I've learned that being able to live your dream is worth more than a paycheck. I've learned that just because a place has an enchanting name, doesn't mean it will live up to one's expectations.

Mostly, I want to say "Thank you!" for creating some of the most endearing characters of all time! Arthur, Carolyn, Douglas, Martin, Karl, Herc, and lest I forget, Mr. Birling, have become close friends and I shall miss being able to share new experiences with them. Perhaps, one day, years from now, you will let us know how they have faired in a special?

God bless you, John1

All too often the press states that people who love "Cabin Pressure" are there only-or primarily- for one person. I'll admit that is how I found the show, but I quickly fell in love with the writing and have since listened to all of your shows. (I have made all of my library colleagues listen to your bit about the "50 things to do before 30 books"-so clever and SO true.)

You are extremely talented and funny, without being cruel--which most comedians and humorists seem to constantly resort to nowadays. Listening to your shows is just FUN. It makes me feel better-- as others have said, HAPPY.

I do not live in Europe so I'll have to wait for the broadcast but it's one of those waiting periods that is conflicted--I can't wait to hear it, but once I do, it's over. However, I'll console myself with the knowledge that even once "Cabin Pressure" is over, you will continue to give us wonderful shows to listen to. So thank you for those as well.
And I will continue to suggest to patrons at the library who are looking for Audiobooks that, well, they *might* just want to listen to this lovely radio show from Britain that we have on CD... (might as well indoctrinate as many into the cult as possible, no?)

You are all, well, beilliant! I can't wait to see what you do next!

My world was the opposite of brilliant and nowhere near a lemon yellow shade when I stumbled into Cabin Pressure, desperately looking for distraction. I'm a pianist. Also human. Unfortunately that meant over practice landed me unable to use a hand for months, and suspending a huge performance I had put a year of effort into.

I unintentionally barrelled through all four series in a day. I laughed and laughed, thinking only of Talisker, Toblerone and neurotic bassoonists. (By the way, I know two bassoonists whose version of tennis is to volley attempted murder accusations). Instead of drowning by Debussy pieces I couldn't/wasn't allowed to play, I imagined how many otters could fit into concert halls, watched out for Yellow Cars and annoyed people with random references.

Since then I have made it my mission to inflict it upon others and eventually they too end up howling with laughter, if not addicted as I am. MJN's antics have replaced my playlists of Debussy and co for what I fall asleep to. (Well, mostly).

Apologies for rambling but your Brilliance turned my upside down world perfectly sideways and not a single word in the history of languages on Earth (regardless of dimension) could express how much I owe to Cabin Pressure. So, actually, I take back that apology because your words, albeit filtered through the mouths of characters, get me through bad, boring, bumbling, brainy, babbling and brilliant days. Always.

Thank you. (Yellow Car).

Wow. I always would have called myself a fan just because I listen to the show a lot and twist other people's arms until they do the same. But seeing the lengths some of your fans have gone to to show their appreciation just puts that in the dark. I can't imagine watching that video with a dry eye if it was made in mind of something I'd created.

So the very least I could do is to say thank you for one of the finest sitcoms I've known (probably tied with Frasier, just edging out Fawlty Towers and Black Books), I can't wait for the finale, and good luck with whatever you're doing next.

Thank you, Mr. Finnemore, for all the joy that Cabin Pressure has brought me (and the others that I made listen to it). You personally are an example that it is possible for one person to be smart, kind, talented and charming. I am going to miss Arthur (your somewhat slightly dimmer alter-ego) and hope that he will pop up in other programs at random. That may not be realistic, but I will still hope because we all need an Arthur in our lives somewhere.

Dear John,
I am obsessed with Cabin Pressure. It is simply wonderful- no words can explain!
A very close friend of mine has recently had a cancer relapse (it's funny- we met at the same school that Roger Allam went to) and she has strictly instructed us all to send her positive vibes. So I'm putting together a small care package for her including every episode of Cabin Pressure ever made. I figure you can't get any more positive than Arthur Shappey imagining hypothetical otters while playing yellow car!

So thank you, on behalf of my friend and myself for creating such an uplifting show. If you ever get round to reading this (you're probably busy being awesome somewhere) then please think of her and send her some positive vibes.

I discovered the series a few weeks ago, and was listening to it in my car while my 8 year old was in it. I offered to turn it off, because it was a bunch of grownups and talking, but she asked me to leave it on, because she thought Arthur was funny.

Now it has become a shared experience for us, we listen in the car, and sometimes if she has had a hard day, at bedtime before her story. While the nuances can go over her head, she enjoys the characters, and loves to predict how they will react to things as they come up. And we've had lots of discussions about airplanes.

She still likes Arthur best. The other day, we went to the library so she could do homework and I could do work, and she forgot her homework folder. I just turned to her and said, "...you CLOT!" and we both laughed our asses off.

Thank you John and the whole cast, etc. for Cabin Pressure! I truly enjoy listening to it and have even gotten my teens (and some of their friends) to listen as well. SO wish there were more season! Ce la vie. You are, as always, BRILLIANT!
