Zurich - Part One
Strap in, chaps. We're ready for take-off.
I won't be doing Farewell Bear Facts for Zurich for a few days, partly to give people a chance to listen to it on iPlayer, and partly because it's Christmas. But feel free to leave your comments here, and in the similar post I'll put up for part two tomorrow.
Hope you like it...

When I tuned in 5 minutes before the show, my stomach was in knots! I've been waiting for this for so long and now that it's here, I'm so sad! As wonderful as it was, it's melancholy to see it end. I predict I'll be in tears tomorrow.
Thank you Mr. Finnemore for sharing your amazing comedic gift with all of us and for creating these characters we've all come to love.
Can't wait to see what Douglas has up his sleeve.
I'd gladly kick in my life savings to keep G-ERTI in the family.
(Oh, and the ice cream song to the tune of "Greensleeves" was hysterical!)
You, Sir, are a genius - an unexpectedly evil one! Well done you!
The next 24 hours are going to be the longest of my life...
Cor, Douglas-shaped intrigue afoot - I'm now going to spend the rest of the day trying to work out what it might be, as I'm sure you trailed a clue somewhere in the series...
Great episode, and I'm so glad that Arthur's got his ice-cream van at last.
OMGOMGOMGOMG, what does Douglas have up his sleeve this time?
Holy cow, that was amazing and brilliant! I'm so excited for the next one! Probably going to cry, but I'm so happy! At least this cliffhanger's not as mean as the last one!
What will happen tomorrow.
Whatever does happen, we know that it will be amazing, you clever monster.
Thank you.
If the reason Gordon is so desperate for GERTI is because of a large, 20+ year's worth hoard of Talisker whiskey, then I may just do a little jig of joy!!
You did well !! I feared this episode, but it was just excellent and I didn´t cry I laughed :)
IM NOT OKAY LOL
(GOOFY IS SLIGHTLY OFF OMG)
So, Arthur is going to have a glorious future as a painter of slightly off Disney characters. But what about everyone else?
You, John Finnemore, are a very clever sausage indeed. No doubt I will have more to say after tomorrow, and once it's all sunk in. It feels like Christmas night, waiting for ep 2. I'll find it hard to sleep tonight....
Woop woop!
I was worried about ordering the box set, just in case I didn't like Zurich (hated Serenity and last MASH episode) - good heavens, suppose you went all serious and killed off one of the characters because you would no longer need him?
But I ordered it anyway this morning, and Zurich was excellent, and I have hours of listening pleasure to look forward to. Go JF!
What... what just happened?
I don't even have words. Is it too much for us to still hope for a fairytale ending? After all, Douglas is doing something clever. That means that everything will be all right, right?
Wow!!! Loved the Cabin ÁPressure Adven, read it every day.
Thank you very much!!
Listened today too, wondering what will Douglas do??? Maybe Gerti was once the plane of some important person... ?
Loved how the auctioneer's estimation of Gerti gradually grew :)
You're stuff is great, Mr F! See you tomorrow :)
Soooo, when I asked you in Milan if Goofy was slightly off, and you didn't properly answer me, that was you being sneaky, wasn't it? Thank you for that!
AMAZING episode, chap! I can't wait for tomorrow, but also I'M NOT READY FOR THIS!!!
Today's episode was amazing!!
Brilliant performance as Arthur, loved the more-than-slightly-off Goofy. I can't wait for the resolution tomorrow, which I have no doubts will be a great and honouring end for the series.
Thank you for sharing all the farewell bear facts with us over the last month, it has been great fun.
Looking forward to future work of yours!
Wishing you great holidays!
Well... That was no way 30 minutes...
I'm now going to listen to this on repeat, write a gazillion stories, count the JFSP references, cry a bit and hope that I won't bite off all my fingernails while waiting for tomorrow.
Now, before we all turn into a blubbering mess: THANK YOU. And Douglas had better do something clever and fix things! ;)
It's been wonderful listening to the characters develop and I will miss getting new episodes... But I listen to those we have a lot and they will always be a huge part of my life.
I look forward to the final episode tomorrow.
You are a brilliant writer :) Thanks again!
I really appreciated the reference to your "slightly off Disney character" sketch, and I'm really proud to have picked up on it. I was a bit nervous about this episode, purely because it's getting really near the end and I get way too emotionally attached to my favorite programs, but I actually laughed so hard my neighbours knocked on the wall, twice. So all in all, even though I will really miss the show, I really really can't wait for the next episode!
Look, we all know Douglas will do something clever and everything will be all right.
I love how hard and fast Douglas had to think for this. This episode was pure rocket fuel for squee! I think I sprained something flapping my arms about. LOVED the delivery on "TEN MILLION POUNDS!!!" It's as funny as heck, yet at the same time, all Arthur's desperation not to keep Gerti from Gordon is right there. Now that is some nuanced shouting!
Absolutely brilliant, John! If I could put the worth of this episode into monetary units, I think it would be about TEN MILLION POUNDS!!!
And lovely Theresa scenes, she's my absolute favourite character.
John, right now I feel like when Arthur was asked (St. Petersburg) what is his dad like.
You are...
You are...
You are...
You are...
You are...
A genius. An amazing writer. A man whose radio show always takes my breath away and makes me laugh in the same moment. You are, in a word, brilliant (not that this is something you don't know). I can't wait for the second part of Zurich and I thank you for the way this episode goes.
Thank you for making MJN fly.
Can I have a strawberry calippo please?
Also, I don't think Gordon's hidden anything aboard Gerti. I think Gerti is just such a rare plane, being a one off drunken one night drafting session between a Lockheed Martin engineer and a McDonnell Douglas engineer, she's got to be something amazing to a real collector of aviatonal history. On par with a functioning and air worthy Mark 1 Avro Arrow! I've always hoped she'll end up at Duxford, and right now I feel like she might!
Poor Douglas. The thought of no word games, actually having to load and unload the plane and not being Captain or First Officer. Such pain for him.
Also, was there a significantly increasing level of affection between Carolyn and Herc? Amazing.
I'm just amazed that Princess Theresa didn't intervene in the auction. I wonder if she will tomorrow?
Now we have to wait 24 h to hear what clever idea Douglas has! WAITWAITWAITWAITWAIT sorry...
Gladly I'm working tomorrow til noon so I get some distraction!
Don't know whether I'm sad that it will end or happy that we have this amazing show to listen to whenever we like - veryveryvery often!
Thank you sooooo much John and merry Christmas!
Cornelia Germany
I have long been considering making a supercut of all the amounts of money mentioned in Cabin Pressure, to go with my one of all the place names. Now, "TEN MILLION POUNDS" has made such a prospect virtually irresistable.
I loved it! I cannot put into words what I thought. I can't wait for tomorrow! Thank you for making it John!Thank you so so much for creating this wonderful show!
Thank you for MJN fly! I-i-i-i-i-scream i-i-ice-cream! %D
Congratuverylations on a wonderful penultimate episode Mr Finnemore. I will always adore you, and this series.
Loved the souvenir programme reference with the ice cream van. However, I am stressed out by the sort-of cliffhanger.
Oh God, so many conflicting emotions right now.
I almost lost it at GERTIs last flight (the whole "going to the vet" thing - you mean, mean man, you really WANT to make us cry, don't you?!?)
I'm really looking forward to tomorrow but then again I'm really, really not because it's the end but then again I want to know if Douglas' future really looks as bleak as his job interview predicted it to be (no, it can't be, it's Douglas, after all!) and how all the others will fare and most of all I want to know what GERTIs secret turns out to be, oh dear...
But there's one thing I'm definitely very sure of: tomorrow's episode will be BRILLIANT!
Quick question, was there any particular inspiration behind GRIMY, or was it a reference to your opinion on the job Douglas was interviewing for?
Thank you so much for Cabin Pressure, I’m sure you must know, but it really does mean an awful lot to many people.
"TEN MILLION POUNDS!"
I died.
But then I came back to life. Can't miss the next episode, you know.
Hi John, I make a habit of listening to CP when at airports or on planes. Rather distracted the pilot I was sitting next to on a 10 seated plane ten days ago, as I chuckled my way through our flight! Listened to Zurich this morning (Christmas Eve) in NZ. Fabulous stuff. What an amazing labor of love. Looking forward to the final installment (fittingly) on Christmas morning. Sarah
I actually had low expectations - I didn't think anything could be worth the wait and the story's build up. I was wrong. This was an amazing episode. It was so wonderful!
ohk i was wrong earlier when i said i won't miss it because i listen to episodes almost everyday... listening to zurich... i know i am going to... so very much...
but i will still have TEN MILLION POUNDS......
That job interview was like Douglas's own personal hell. Unloading the plane! No games!!
Cannot WAIT to hear what happens next! Such a funny and brilliant episode!
Loved it!!! John I want a podcast of Arthur singing a made-up ice cream song to the tune of Greensleeves, could not stop laughing.
Thank you so much for Cabin Pressure - Zurich was AMAZING! And I have to say the auction scene is my favourite Cabin Pressure moment. Can't wait for part 2!
Well, Radio 4 certainly made us wait for this one, but it was well worth it! Thank you so much John - I especially loved the ice cream van and Arthur's references to Disney movie endings!
When I first became a fan of Radio 4 I never would have imagined that my family would gather around the radio to listen live with me, but there were five of us listening together to Cabin Pressure tonight, which was lovely!
Tears have already been shed here, but I can't wait for tomorrow to find out what happens to these beloved characters you have created. I know you will have written and performed a fitting end to this amazing work of comedy which you should be incredibly proud of.
I hope everyone reading this has a wonderful final flight tomorrow and a very Merry Christmas!
Thank you!! You are absolutely amazing at comedy!!
So... Arthur's always secretly wanted to be 'the man who makes the noise of the ice cream van?'
Head canon TOTALLY accepted!
I can't wait for tomorrow, when I presume that Douglas will do something clever and everything will be fine. Thank you so very much for this amazing comedy gem!
Johnnie Walker and Minnie Driver! CanIHaveAPointPleaseDouglas?
Ooh yes, Cat Deeley and Rufus Hound.
Alistair Darling and Willem Dafoe :-)
Burt Lancaster and Susannah York:)
Ooh nice one. Um, um, um.... long think.... Stephen Fry and Danny Baker?
Dawn French and Arthur English
Tess Daly and Keira Knightley?
Summer Glau and Autumn Phillips, although that is a bit of a one-sided fight.
Nice one.
Ben Stiller and Andrew Motion?
Anthony Head and Michael Foot ;-)
Loved Zurich and can't wait for tomorrow!
It will be 5:30am Xmas Day here in Australia and I can't think of a better present.
Ethan Hawk and Sally Sparrow
JM Constable and Mackenzie Crook
It was fantastic! Also will Douglas do something clever and keep Cabin Pressure going? Now that would be the best Christmas present in the world. I'm somewhat scared about it all being over tomorrow. Might end up crying all of Christmas eve...
Anyway, poor Arthur should have gotten the man who paints slightly off cartoon characters to do goofy - probably better than a scary hippo ;)
Holly Hunter and Jacqueline du Pre
Good one! Eric Idle and Busy Philipps
How about Roger Allam and Virginia Wolff?
Ah yes, perhaps that's why Roger Allam(b) clashes with Hercules the Bercules?
Graeme Garden and Adrian Mole
Miranda Hart and Gerry and the Pacemakers
Russell Crowe (in the voice) and Penelope Farmer
David Tyler and Margaret Thatcher
Stephanie Cole and David Byrne.
Oh John, you sod. You made me do tears. Of sad, and of laughter. Marvellous almost-end to the finest radio comedy ever. Thank you for every single episode, and also for the Farewell Bear Facts. I'll be toasting the end tomorrow with a glass of Talisker Talisker...
(And Arthur's ice cream van... priceless!)
You are brilliant! Simply brilliant! Loved today - can't wait to listen again before tomorrow because I was feeling kind of emotional when listening today and, as always, there's just so much in every episode, I need to listen at least twice right away to appreciate it all.
Again - thank you thank you thank you for these adorable characters. I so wish English had a longer alphabet - from here to eternity.
Michael Caine and Abel Tasman.
John Wayne and Ruby Wax.
Not going to comment on the episode - am saving that till tomorrow.
But - You Guys!
LOVE the enthusiastic taking up of Douglas's latest Game. I hooted out loud when I read your suggestions, and then couldn't explain myself, as family haven't had a chance to listen yet.
Michael Foot and Korn
Michael Fish and anyone called Annette
Arch Enemies
Julie Goodyear & Willie Thorne
Michael Fish & Stephen Fry
Tom Waits & Geoffrey Rush
George Burns & George Bush
Martin Freeman & John Sergeant
Michael Jordan & Neal Israel
Arthur's allergic reaction faded astonishingly quickly, didn't it? (I assume so less fanatical listeners wouldn't wonder why he was talking like that.)
Great job--funny and heart-tugging in equal measure. Looking forward to tomorrow.
Steve Jobs and Bob Dole
Susan Boyle and Squeeze
Are we allowed fictional characters? If so, Jeremy Irons can be paired with Lord Rust
Judy Gold and Harold Miner
I was going to wait until tomorrow to tell you how much I've enjoyed Cabin Pressure. But I wanted to join in the game too much:
Jack Sprat and Carrie Fisher.
So thank you for Cabin Pressure from A to Z. May all your future ventures give as much pleasure as this one and bring in heaps of money, if heaps of money is a thing you feel you'd quite like to have.
oh, Carl. Carl from ATC, you did me in. I was holding on until then!
Can't wait until tomorrow.
Harrison Ford and Abraham Lincoln.
Jack Black and Jack White?
Ben Stiller and Taylor Swift
Jack Black and Brad Paisley
Keira Knightley and Tim Daly
Kelly Ripa and Hugo Weaving
Natalie Portman and John Waters
Clint Eastwood and Adam West
Sophie Hunter and Teri Hatcher (bit of a stretch, I admit)
Gordon Ramsey and Buffalo Bill (CSU Rams versus CU Buffaloes)
What a great episode! I feel like I was on an emotional roller coaster. I got a bit misty when Carolyn broke down and when Carl was saying goodbye to GERTI. My kids and I were yelling bids at our computer when Gordon showed up to the auction. (He CAN'T have her!!) I was thrilled to hear Martin and Teresa so happy. And Arthur's ice cream van chime has taken over for our favorite moment in the series. (My boys laughed so hard they were crying.)
Now we're just keeping our fingers crossed that Douglas will do something clever and save the day one last time.
I'm so excited for tomorrow's episode!!
Thank you for all of the joy you've given us with MJN and it's crew!
Just wanted to add to the stream of thanks because it is most deserved. Cabin Pressure is something very unique and we're all very grateful for it.
I think it's safe to say that people will continue to listen to it and Radio 4 will be left with a little Gerti-shaped hole in its broadcasting.
I do wish Douglas would do something clever so that it could be kept on air but sadly we all know that's not going to happen this time. So we can raise a glass of Talisker/pineapple juice and toast the last six years of fun on Gerti.
Thank you again, and merry Christmas!
♪ Geeeeet dressed you merry gentlemen... ♪
Britney Spears and James Blunt

Stephen King and Gerard Butler
What an awesome ride it has been with the folks from MJN air. Thank you Mr Finnemore. Lots of love from Singapore :)
so...is this a placeholder?
[Possibly a Martin answer, as it's a stretch, but a tribute of sorts to the first word game we heard them play]
Brian May and Brian Can't.
Merry Christmas to you as well :)
Well you've done it again you comedic genius you! You had me in stitches and when when I wasn't laughing I was crying. Karl's farewell and Carolyn breaking down hit me right in the feels! Also, can Hercules stop being so perfect? The way he comforts Carolyn, that damn old sky god made me swoon!
I will be saving tomorrow's episode until I get home from work so I can toast my favourite airdot farewell with some Talisker :)
Briiliant! Had finished listening to all the previous CP episodes on my commute, so my player kindly started me back at "Abu Dhabi" on my way home.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Also, awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I am both happy and sad.
I'm so glad that Martin and Theresa are doing well. If they end up married, will Martin be able to wear a crown in addition to his hat? It would be the most impressive hat in the fleet.
But I'm sad that I just realized Arthur didn't describe Martin's getting the job as brilliant.
And I loved Karl's farewell to GERTI, but I'm sad that that may be last we hear from Fitton ATC.
I'm so conflicted, but I'm sure that it'll be brilliant.
As Arthur would say - Brilliant! (And I was cheering our crew on as they were outbidding Gordon!) Can't imagine how Douglas will cleverly sort this out, but if Arthur trusts him (see St. Petersburg), that's good enough for me.
Oh, and for Douglas's new game?
Gary Oldman and Paul Newman
Okay, since everyone else is doing it: Katie Holmes and Michael Moriarty
Wonderful Episode! Looking forward to tomorrow!
Also
Keven Bacon and Stephen Fry
Nigel Hawthorn & Sam Axe
(since Douglas started with "John Snow" I'm thinking fictional characters are allowed)
Heather Small and Robert Hughes?
To Anonymous (who posted at 6.53am):
John Snow is fictional, but Jon Snow is real - a presenter of news on ITV. But I like the way you're thinking...
Ned Stark and David Furnish
David Tennant and Sherlock Holmes
Bradley Wiggins and Clare Balding
Mark Owen and Johnny Cash
Yvette Fielding and Nora Batty
Jasper Carrot and Jessica Rabbit
... aargh, running out.... let me check my citrus pocket. Keith Lemon and Jason Orange?
I'm rather concerned about Liechtenstein's missing airport. Princess Theresa says it doesn't have one, even though they flew in and out of it only four episodes ago. Did someone steal it?
ClosetDiva,
I like your thinking but wouldn't
Gary Oldman and Gary Numan
be better?
Heinz Wolff and Allan Lamb
Billy Ocean and Sandi Shaw
I THOUGHT THAT! He has referenced his own work before on CP so he very well could be☺️
Noel Coward and Ed Balls
Jason Orange and Eric Pickles
The episode is called Vaduz so I'm assuming they flew there and drove to pick them up?
In honour of the of the last ever cabin pressure tonight, I just wanted to raise a glass of talisker (or apple juice) and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a BRILLIANT New Year! Oh and make sure you check your stockings for lemons and your fridges for otters!
Don McClean and Winnie The Pooh
(Fridge checked and clear)
Simon Mayo and Bertie Wooster
Absolutely wonderful, more than worth the wait and it flew by so quickly, can't wait for this evening's broadcast! Thank you so much for creating this perfect series and bringing it to what I am sure will be a satisfying conclusion. Even though it would have been lovely to have more episodes of CP I agree that it is much better that such a shining star of radio comedy should burn out while it is at its brightest!
As for the arch enemies game:
Sean Locke and Tim Key
William Makepeace thackeray and Evelyn Waugh
Barry Cryer and Barry Chuckle
Eva Marie Saint and Paul Sinha
Billie Jean King and Ellory Queen
Fiona Apple and Jason Orange
and a slightly laboured pop music one:
Helen Love and Jack Hayter
Almost too busy with Christmas preparations to sit down in front of a computer, but have to add my voice quickly to all the others. I'm one of those apparently many people who were cheered up by discovering Cabin Pressure at a difficult time. (The ruthless cut-throat world of amateur opera is not an environment for anyone of a nervous disposition). You probably didn't intend to write comedy therapy but it seems that for a whole lot of us, you did.
Can't say how much I admire it and how much it's meant to me. Can't believe it's almost over, either.
You know, pro crazy golf would be a winner. Compared to boring normal golf, it would come to a quicker resolution (ideal in these purportedly low attention span times),have more interesting courses and would be a lot better on the TV.
Got to say a massive thank Mr Finnemore, this series has made some really hard times a lot easier. I wont for a second say that I won't miss the show but at least I have a fantastic library of your work to keep me entertained.
In the immortal words of Arthur it's been BRILLIANT!
@Alex G: There is an airport in St. Gallen-Altenrhein, Switzerland which is about 50 kilometres away from Vaduz. Perhaps they used this one.
I saw 113 comments on this blogpost, and so many have responses for Douglas's latest game. Brilliant!
Bill Gates and Diana Dors
I think we need a book of Douglas's word games some time.
Virginia Wolf and Larry Lamb
Thank you so much for Cabin Pressure.
George Best and Conchita Wurst
Emmanuel Ax and Elijah Wood
Hmmm. Good call by Gert to come up with 'John Wayne and Ruby Wax.'
It's like Fizz Buzz, when Gerti started playing - of course Gert would know what to say
> Hmmm. Good call by Gert to come up with 'John Wayne and Ruby Wax.'
I was momentarily stunned when that line appear on the broadcast. I had serendipitously duplicated a line of John Finnemore's dialogue!
Of course, he had invented the game, and a dozen people before me had played on this blog, so all that really happened was that I got lucky.
Still, I can claim on a Comedy Writers' IQ scale to have scored almost one whole microfinnemore. Time to retire while I am ahead.
Unlike Gerty, who soars to ever greater heights,
My favorite two on this thread: mine, because it is mine, and Anonymous' "Gary Oldman and Gary Numan"
Terry Christian and Zoe Lyons
Valerie Singleton and Fred Couples
MC Hammer and Jimmy Nail
Edward Fox and Rufus Hound
and... Robert DeNiro and Mia Farrow (sorry - bit of a Series-2-Martin answer that one)
the saddest thing about the series ending is that I wish I had a time machine so I could go back to the beginning and listen as a new fan rather than accidentally discovering it in the summer of 2014. but oh well, at least I have found it and have already listened to it 3 times, something I will continually go back to. I wait less patiently than a passenger in a derby to hear of your next work-in-progress, for I have already consumed the treat that is the souvenir program.
Sooty and Sweep
(Just guessing what Arthur might play in the game).
Fatboy Slim and...himself?
John, i fell in love with cabin pressure and listen again and again. Thank you so much for a truly great radio comedy series, my whole family loves it and and we will all miss it :(
Just a quick question on q tiny plot niggle:
How was the scrap metal dealer able to fly GERTI away so quickly?
What are the chances that he and/or any pilot he could call at short notice were certified to fly such a rare aircraft?
And, even if he was, surely part of such a sale would be a comprehensive hand-over briefing from the previous owner.
Dear John Finnemore, how long before these episodes are released on iTunes we out in the colonies are dying to find out what happens. That is in South Africa by the way. we are huge fans of you all on Cabin Pressure
